most of my life, strangers have expressed interest or disbelief when presented with my given name. it's never been a big deal for me as it's not exceptionally common in english-speaking countries in this day and age.

i do wonder, however, at the apparent lack of curiousity expressed by my fellow goths and pagans. i find myself wondering if they are so accustomed to affectation that they'd act just as non-plussed if i gave my name as Lady Ravenbutt.

I don't know what your real name is, but slightly unusual names don't phase me much. I gave my daughter a name which is unheard of in America, and even in England/Scotland is still uncommon in recent years.

I have a penchant for names like that.

Pagans don't raise an eyebrow at my name either. But they do tend to assume that I took it as my pagan name and are usually shocked to find out it is my given name.
I also use my name as an on the spot IQ test. If you can pronounce it with out hesitation you automatically go on my list of people I like. If you can tell me who she is off the top of your head, I'll sleep with you. And if you don't try to give me some silly nickname I will marry you. (although James still trys to call me Percy.)

My mother gave me what that year was probably the second most common first name behind Jenny - Yay, people knew me by my last name or last name initial. The jokes about muttering something (then loudly Raven or Moon) to get yourself a friend .. or calling "Wolf" for a boy (usually) or "Lilith" if you want to meet a girl- that probably still works. I learned that people can't catch on to pagan names that don't have sequels.. like when I used Phlogiston people would call me something Phlogiston, or ask me Phlogiston what. just one of those things I guess.

I dunno, your given name never surprised me any, but my name isn't that common either. I don't think my name is rare, but given the number of people that can't say it correctly, perhaps it is.
