I don't understand how people can take flax oil. The taste always makes me gag. The texture is icky. It's just... gross. And then I get gross flax burps for the next few hours. I can't get rid of the aftertaste--ever. I've had swiss cheese, quorn parmesan, chocolate cookies, soda, tea, etc. It's been a couple hours and the horrid taste of doom will not go away. It's always like this. It's not quite as bad this time, because at least the aftertaste is cinnamon-flax instead of oil.

Boy says my body is just crazy.

I bought some cinnamon-flavored (oil of cinnamon, not artificially-flavored) flaxseed oil today because, dammit, I need to get those Omega-3 fatty acids. And, well, I had a coupon. ;)

We're going to each have a tablespoon a day. I will complain about it, boy will tell me I'm nuts. :)

Mmmmm, flaxseed oil shooters. Oh, joy.

I should be getting dressed and putting on makeup, but boy is rubbing my back. How can I move?

I take flax seed oil every day. I mix it with fruit and yogurt. Yogurt and cottage cheese help you to get more out of the oil. I started mixing with mandarin oranges and yogurt at first. The citrus taste makes the flax oil not taste as strong. You also could take it in capsules if you wanted. At walmart a big bottle of 1200 mg pills is like $6. Cheaper than the oil. You're probably gonna need more than a tablespoon a day because that's about how much you need per 100 lbs.
If I don't take my flax seed oil every day my skin starts to get bad again. It's really important for me. You'd probably see a big improvement too. It just takes a little time.

One other idea, you can take salted tortilla chips and dip them in your oil

i'll only buy barleans or spectrum brands, due to the quality control. the capsules are expensive and i'd need to take too many of them, comparatively. and i've tried mixing it with yogurt, cottage cheese, fruit, chips, etc. it all triggers my gag reflex. it's the flavor of the oil itself. it just doesn't do it for me. *nothing* can mask the texture and the flavor for me. i love the seeds themselves, but the oil. it's just always done this to me, for some reason.

i used to put flax seeds in my salad. the dressing and nuts and things i put in my salad made it so i didn't even notice the seeds.

Is the oil so much different than the seeds? Kate and I put 2 tablespoons of ground flax seeds either in our oatmeal or cereal in the morning...they are YUmMy!

i don't eat breakfast because i'm not up. i rarely eat oatmeal or cereal. and ground flaxseeds lose their power quickly. i don't have a spice grinder to grind them fresh.

Would a mortar and pestle be enough to grind up the seeds? They're fairly inexpensive, compared to a spice grinder.

not really. the seeds have a very hard coating and i have very painful wrists. ;)

I thought the seeds might be tougher than your wrists, but it was worth a shot. Maybe you should look into getting a mini food processor, not just for grinding seeds but for other useful things too. BB&B has them for $39.99, and figure out however much it would be if you used one of their 20% coupons. Cuisinart has mini food processors for that price that come in a chrome finish!

i have a mini food processor. i don't think it could handle grinding something as small as seeds. and if it *could*, it would probably generate too much heat and render the omega-3s useless.

I've never tried the oil, but I put the seeds themselves into soups and things. They thicken them up and I don't notice the texture or flavor much.

the heat of cooking degrades the good fatty acids, so i don't cook with flaxseed often. i use it as a binder sometimes and i like *eating* the seeds themselves--they taste fine. but it takes a lot of seeds to get the fatty acids and i can't chew them, so they pass through undigested.

I always learn something from you. I didn't know that about cooking degrading the fatty acids. I will have to think of a better way to use them myself.

my sister says the best tasting ones
(to her anyway) are the high lignan
ones & her favorite brands are barleans
& spectrum.

From: [identity profile] krasota.livejournal.com
i only buy spectrum or barleans because of quality control/standardized formulae. and the high lignan ones are the worst for me. it's something about the texture and flavor of the oil itself. it triggers my gag reflex and leaves me with flax burps for HOURS. i don't know why.

You still eat eggs, right? Free range organic eggs all the way for your Omega 3's, baby. And for boy, free range organic grass-fed meat.

i eat two to four eggs a week. i buy local, organic eggs. eggs have been triggering my nausea and my reflux lately.

Watch out...I started out having nausea and reflux when eating eggs as a kid. Now they give me a full-on gastric assault of doom if I eat even a bite of egg or too much of anything containing eggs.

If it wouldn't degrade in hot liquids, you could add it to tea. If you like cinnamonny tea, that is.:) It also sounds like something that would fit right into a smoothie...I think that it'd be far too noticable in anything chilled that was thinner.

Of course, you didn't *ask* for advice...so I'm just gonna pretend I'm talking to my friend the plant over here and if you want to listen in, you're welcome. ;)

it would degrade when heated, sadly. and i'd still taste it. the taste cannot hide, nor the texture. my uvula finds it and gets pissed. ;)

my mommy makes me fruit smoothies with flax seed oil in them.

she puts in frozen mixed fruits (bluberries, blackberries, etc), frozen cherries, and some vanilla yogurt, and the flax seed oil and blends it all up.

i find it quite yummy and she gets the flax seed oil in me so it all works out.

i can get the right proportions of said elements if you'd like, just let me know.

see, even when it's *IN* smoothies, it triggers my gag reflex.

it's the taste, the texture... it cannot hide. i'm still burping flaxseed oil taste. it's been several hours.

ok, i read all the comments and here's my idea:
buy your normal oil
buy those empty capsule thingys
use a syringe of some sort & inject the capsules - take the capsules.
you'll probably still burp it up since that comes from digestion, but it might reduce the gag/taste problem.

i'm like that with osha extract, which is the only thing that will hasten the healing of a bad flu, for me. osha gives me the squick-face!

what other oils for omega-3s have you tried?

I haven't tried any others because I'm vegeterian. That rules out fish.

walnut oil and walnuts? canola? walnut oil is a relatively new one on my own list, and i've been using it regularly and seen some good effects.
you'd have to take either walnut or canola quite a bit more since it has 1/3rd as much omega-3 as flaxseed, but at least you wouldn't gag.

Date: 2004-01-25 10:47 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] krasota.livejournal.com
i can't eat walnuts daily (nor that many walnuts ever), they make my mouth itch. it's probably tannic acid rather than an allergic reaction of some sort, but not worth the risk. and walnut oil would definitely make me gag.

canola/rapeseed oil still has the oil factor. ew. that's part of the problem. the texture of fats/oils is one of those squick things for me.
