I've got some shrubs I can't identify. I'm just not very good with landscaping plants.

If you can help me out at all, I'd appreciate it. You can even direct folks here if you think they can help. I can take more pictures, though probably not too many after the next hour passes. I can take more tomorrow, if necessary.

Please help!

Thanks ever so much.

That second one looks like pyracantha, but I'm not sure the leaves are the right color.

I grew up with pyracantha and the leaves are smaller and rounder. They have wicked thorns too. I used to have to prune the beasts for punishment.

Mystery shrub #2 looks like Nandina. I had some before and I love it. For some reason I like saying the word and friends and I would randomly shout Nandina! for no apparent reason. Fun times :)

I do believe you're right! And I've got three of those in my own back yard - I've just assumed all these years that it was pyracantha.

Thanks for contributing to my education :):).

Yep, it is. Someone in [livejournal.com profile] livejardin suggested that and I do believe it is!

I've got two local plants guides at school that I could look in tomorrow, if you're willing to wait that long for an answer. I know I've seen all those plants... but theres a reason I studied microbiology :)

Feel free, but I'm relatively certain none of these are native. I'm pretty sure they're all alien plants used in landscaping.

Conviently, the one guide I have is for that exact purpose. It is an educational field guide I picked up from the summer training I did for Bridging the Watershed. One of the units we did was on native vs. alien plants (Alien Invaders :). So the guide lists both native/nonnative and distinguishes with nonnatives are invasive. The goal of the unit is to educate students as to what plants don't belong in this area.
:)
The other, I'm not sure on, so we'll see.

I forgot how much I suck at plant identification. Especially when its not in front of me. So, one of two things, either they aren't in my plant ID book, or more likely is that I just suck and can't ID them.
A couple of sites you might already know about, but might help with an ID

I'll probably take a picture and a branch down to the local Ag Ext Office. :) Thanks for trying, though!

I believe Mystery Shrub #1 is a Rhododendron (sp?). Looks much like the ones we had in front of the house for years.

The question is whether the shrub blooms and what the blooms look like. It looks a lot like a camellia bush to me.

I was thinking that after I posted... There do appear to be buds in there, and she does mention them. What they look like, though, I don't know.

Krasota?

It's not a camellia. We've got those, too.

There are no flower buds on shrub #1, just leaf buds.

It is most definitely *not* a rhododendron. Those I'm quite good at identifying--I love natives. ;)

It's bothering me that I don't know what mystery shrub #3 is, because I know I've seen it.

It's already been identified for you, but I'll give a third vote for the second bush being nandina. I have bunches of it growing in my backyard (except I don't get that many berries - wow).

I got a brief note from my friend and she said this on a couple..said she would get her nursery books and look for the others...

Looks to me like shrub #1 is an Indian Hawthorne. Ask her if it blooms tiny pink or white flowers.
Shrub #2 looks like old fashioned Nandina...but it could be something else. I'll look in some of my books at the store today.
