Jericho and I are sitting outside. Jerry's got a smoked knuckle bone to gnaw on. The feeders have visiting house finches and goldfinches. I hear the chickadee somewhere. The catbird occasionally eyes us up. I'm half hoping the titmouse comes down to steal hair from Jericho.

The boxwood next to me is speaking. It sounds like white noise. Very odd. I hope it doesn't have some sort of bug infestation. Oddly enough, by looking at it, I think I'm hearing the unfurling of new leaves from the bud.

The shadow of a raptor just passed by, the songbirds scattered. I think I'm going to scatter some birdseed on the sidewalk and invite [livejournal.com profile] babyrapture to watch them with me. He's feeling a bit feverish and looks peaked. I think he might like hearing all about the birds today, though. If not, we'll find something else to keep our interest.

It's early March and I can't smell a whiff of snow in the air. I'd love one more snowstorm, but I don't think we're going to get one.

I think I'll start my seeds this week. I need to either replace my light or borrow one for a few weeks. I found quinoa seeds at Whole Foods last night. I can't wait to grow those. Even if I don't harvest them, I bet they'll be eaten up by the birds. I'll plant it near the amaranth.

Without looking it up myself, do you know what the avg. date of last freeze around C'ville is?

Usually late April, unless there's a full moon in the first half of May.

What IS a chickadee, other than a random term of endearment my Mum uses sometimes ? I didn't realise til now they were a real creature. I'm assuming birdies ? Must go hunting US bird sites...

We mostly have the Carolina Chickadee (http://images.google.com/images?svnum=10&hl=en&lr=&client=safari&rls=en&q=carolina+chickadee&btnG=Search) here, but it's probably fairly intermingled with the black capped Chickadee (http://images.google.com/images?svnum=10&hl=en&lr=&client=safari&rls=en&q=black+capped+chickadee&btnG=Search).

Yes, a small bird. Very cute, very social, very curious.

Wanna trade? I can practically guarantee we'll get at least one more snowstorm, and the high here today was about 20 degrees cooler than what you're experiencing.

Are you growing your own grains now? That's odd, but so are you.
