so... it's highly possible that i grabbed alum instead of cream of tartar while i was making snickerdoodles. it's a case of brain fog + unlabelled white powders.

if i feed these to people, will we all die?

Yikes, what do you have alum for!? It's in most pickles so it generally isn't something that will kill anyone quickly, but I avoid it (and everything else I can that contains aluminum) because I still think aluminum may be related to alzheimer's disease (hence the brain fog that caused you to get the wrong white powder ;).

if i *have* alum, it would be for cleaning steel fixtures.

see, i don't think i would put alum in my spice jars. i'm pretty sure i'd keep it separate.

i should also mention that i make refrigerator pickles and i don't use alum. i'm leering of cooking with it, too.

Wow a fellow fridge-pickle maker! So far I've pickled: daikon, carrots, and ginger. I'm thinking of pickling some burdock soon.
