shoes

yet another appointment with my podiatrist where i don't have new shoes. i suppose i could go looking before my appt.

see... i don't think there's any point in buying new shoes if they're UGLY. i won't wear them. i'm vain. i really won't pay 100 bucks for a pair of new balance sneakers that (a) aren't suitable for mountain trails; (b) are ugly; (c) don't match my wardrobe.

i don't want brown shoes. i don't want white shoes or orange and purple shoes or shoes that look like old fashioned nurse shoes, only black.

i think i should hit (a) ragged mountain running to look for trail boots and (b) Richey, to see if they have anything I can bear. I hate spending this much money on shoes, but walking is something I sort of need to do.

dammit... i read that the more sensible fluevogs (like [livejournal.com profile] baobh's lucky angel boots) can accomodate orthoses and are quite comfortable. i wish i lived near a store which sold them.

i'd jus like some black boots--they can even be walking boots. but i don't want them to be puffy. i don't want them to have weirdly colored soles. i don't want them to have red trim. i don't want to dress like a lumberjack, dammit.

what size shoe do you wear?

it depends on the shoe. that's why i haven't tried mail ordering the fluevogs. i have to try shoes on before i buy them. i can wear anywhere from a 7 to an 8, B to D width, depending on the shoe.

i have a pair i can't wear because of my hyper-extended arches - they ARE great with orthotics, but the tongue and lacing just presses on the top of my foot unpleasantly. if you don't have hyper-extended arches, i'm more than happy to send you my pair - you can try them on, see if they work for you, and if not you can send them back at your leisure because i won't wear them, and i was being extra extra lazy about getting them onto ebay.

what size are they? and how much would you like for them/shipping if i like them and they fit? i'd have to go by the installment plan, since i just bought shoes.

i did buy some lovely leather italian shoes (black mary janes) with a synthetic sole today. expensive, but worth it. they don't hurt at all.

oddly enough, i didn't get the email alert for this comment - mine are size 7, and i'd only take $25 + shipping for them because there's a small chunk off the sole along the toe.

congrats on finding good shoes, though!

I got my tall black stompy boots with the buckle around the calf at 9West. This was a couple of years ago, but they might have something similar, and these boots are wonderful to walk in and wide enough that they could probably accomodate orthoses.

Granted that our respective wardrobes are not carbon copies of each other, but I could see you wearing these boots.

Some of those shoes that look like old nurses' shoes actually are pretty cool in a 1930's vintage sort of way.

Unfortunately, if there is nothing to your liking available out there you are either going to have to choose between comfort and style or do what many others have done in the past...take initiative to design something that you WILL wear and like. Theres bound to be countless other young, hip people who would love to have something cooler available in special shoes.

**looks down at beat up, boring, white and blue New Balance tennis shoes clashing horribly with pinstriped suit** Oh, how I feel your pain.

If military boots work for you, check out the U.S. Cavalry catalogue. (They have other things, too, including other kinds of shoes/boots, although I'm not sure that you'd like the other kinds of shoes/boots.) I've had good experiences with them. I've been wearing my Corcoran jump boots for about four years and they give me good shock support and good ankle support. I'm also thinking of ordering myself an early Christmas present from them because I need a good pair of winter boots, while still maintaining my "style." ;) (That second pair is by Matterhorn, even though the website isn't very specific about that.)

is that second pair listed in Women's sizes? The first pair is what boy wears. They don't come in my size. :( I got combat boots years ago... they lasted *one* semester before the soles cracked and that was with good socks and nightly airing out. it wasn't *wet* semester either--a remarkably dry, though cold, moscow autumn.

I do like combat boots, but none of the places which stock them have had my sizes in the softer leather boots (i don't like the stiff dress leather) for the last few years.

also, when i did wear them, they took a long time to break in... not fo rmy feet, but for my calves. i have tapered calf muscles (very typically classical feminine musculature) and the top of the boots cut into my calves, since they're made me for men with bulky calves which don't taper. i ended up with a ledge where my muscle changed to accomodate it. it took a few years to get rid of that odd thing.

Yeah, the second pair is in women's sizes, but given the fact that they're pricey and that you've had difficulties with wearing combat boots in the past, your reservations are quite understandable. (If I end up buying that pair, though, I wouldn't mind sharing my thoughts on them.)

On a related note, here's an idea that might help with your calf issue, if you ever decide to try wearing combat boots again:
One thing that I sometimes do is lace mine just past the ankle, then wrap the laces around my ankle twice, double-knot it, and then tie it. Granted, I don't do it for muscle-versus-boot shape issues, though, so I'm not 100% positive that it would help. (I do it because I'm often running late and it takes a little less time that way. :P)

speaking oof $100 shoes....

Have you tried Danskos (at Ritchie & Co.)? Reccommended to me by several nurses, who seem to know all about sore feet and arch support. ;-) Nice Dutchc clogs, super-comfy. The *only* things my feet would tolerate when preggo with the monkey. Expensive but well worth it.
