I'm quite thankful for the Ashkenazic kashrut certifying organizations and their rabbis who decided that soy is not kosher for Passover. Because of this decree, I can stock up on soy-free chocolate once a year and not really worry about it. My freezer hides soy-free chocolate chips and bittersweet chocolate. I can buy organic chocolate bars for snacking and baker's chocolate for cooking, but I like to have bittersweet chocolate on hand for certain things, like cookies.

Well, that yearly stocking up saved my chili. I must put chocolate in my chili. Normally, I use baking chocolate, which is just chocolate--no soy, no sugar, no milk. Apparently, I neglected to add it to my list. Horrors! Then I found a big block of semisweet in the freezer and decided it would do. And it did.

The addition of kalonji to my chili also seems to be a good move. Yum.

I've got rosemary simmering in a pot of water. I'll go strain it in a bit and stick the tea in the fridge to cool. At some point, I'll use it to rinse any gunk out of my hair before I apply my stinky henna mud. YAY!

Remembering to add fennel seed to my infuser of mixed spices was a good move. My chai masala needed that fennel. And the cinnamon sticks I bought at the Amish market in Indiana are flavorful and rich. WOW! This is seriously some of the best cinnamon bark I've ever found. I wonder where they found it? I might need to ask Dad to mail me a larger supply. For now, though, I've plenty. (50 cents for about five 8" sticks and I only use an inch or so at a time, often less).

We're listening to the 80s show on WNRN. The chili is yummy, the tea is soothing. I might get boy to brush and comb all the knots out of my hair soon, that way the henna knottage won't be as woeful as usual.

There's a distinct coating of slippery slushy iciness outside. I think staying home is definitely a good idea. If we lived in town, we'd be at the Dawning as usual, but we don't live in town yet.

i only add 1-2 ounces of baking chocolate per big pot of chili. I could add up to three, I think, but I don't.
