snow snow snow
Jan. 16th, 2003 09:43 pmwe had to go into town to pick up a rental and drop off my car for service. we stopped for pizza, dropped off a prescription, wandered around a used bookstore, waiting for the prescription, then got in the car to head home. there was already a fine coating of snow on the ground, so i turned around to go to whole foods. i wanted to make sure i had some soda for my carbonation fix and i wanted to grab any essentials we were low on (milk, cream, cheese, salad greens).
that done, we headed home.
okay, mistubishis handle poorly in the snow. despite this, i decided to go to kroger (required navigating a steep curve covered in an inch of snow by now). no problem, a little slipping and sliding, we got the cat food and an ice scraper (left mine in the car and the mistubishi's wipers were crap. got back *up* the hill without incident and headed out.
then we saw the young guys with a news camera on the side of the road. i was slowing for the light, so i yelled, "helloooooo!" at them. they came over. the local NBC affiliate. i thought they were UVA students. i don't make a habit of yelling at news affiliates. they wanted to talk to me b/c i was the first woman driver they'd seen that evening.
so, if you live in cville and watch 29, they'll probably show me b/c (a) i said i LIKE driving in snow; (b) i showed little faith in local drivers; and (c) i showed even less faith in local *male* drivers. ;) they got my name and the kid even spelled it right. you won't recognize me, though. i'm not in my car, my hair is pulled back, and i'm not wearing makeup. ;) *giggle* i don't get the local news stations out here (i get new york, though).
it took an hour (rather than 25 min) to get home. lots of slipping and sliding, despite 20 NORMALLY being cleared (the snowplows are housed not far from here). i pulled over for a truck that fishtailed in front of me and spun into the ditch, but he was okay. local rescue happened by (with an SUV), so i moved on my way, since a mid-size mitsubishi shouldn't even be ON the road in those conditions.
we have almost three inches of snow now. it's cold snow, very pretty. i wish i had my car, b/c this rental is NOT suited to wet or icy roads.
that done, we headed home.
