so, i'm watching a mongolian group play on world link. they're pretty cool... a couple women playing stringed lap instruments, traditional stringed and wind instruments, and throat singing...
tom sits down and tries to imitate the throat singers. i inform him that if we want to have kids, we'll have the buy the CD. he stares at me and says, "NO! i have to LEARN this."
then he notices the non-mongolian guy playing bongos.
"dude. he isn't mongolian. i think they got him off the street in New York or something."
then he turns to me... and says from deep in his throat, "you will play with our band."
i love this man.

Date: 2002-11-13 09:58 pm (UTC)I'm slowly beginning to become sick of Huun-Hur-Tu. It frightens me that I'm beginning to pick up approximations of the lyrics to the songs. We sing along as best as we can while Kevin wails. I doubt they have a lyrics website, so sometimes I just make them up..."Ah shoe, icky poo..."
Now the Tuvans don't always calm Kevin. I'm beginning to wonder if he's not crying but rather attempting to throat sing. The cats are not happy at this development...they really don't like the Tuvans to start with.

Date: 2002-11-13 10:23 pm (UTC)we get it on the Dish Network, i have friends who get it on DirectTV. it's usually lumped in with the "free" and public channels (university, religious, MHZ, Colors, etc).
world music is just one of the shows they show.
the women in the band didn't do the throat singing, though. they sang the chorus in very crystalline, pretty voices.

Date: 2002-11-14 10:11 am (UTC)they are truly awesome.
you know, you should see if your cable company can get this channel. you'd like the music segments. Colors (out of denver, but they run MHZ programming, out of DC) or MHZC, as it's sometimes called, is also really good. i can ask my dad if he gets it on his minidish. he's in indiana, on DishTV.
