I slept in today. When I woke up, boy was out in the back corner of the yard, playing his twanger. I could hear the frogs and his music carried on the wind when I stood on the porch.

I sat down to wake up and read a bit while Invader Zim was on. Boy came in and we had food (he had a ham sammich, I had a sesame bagel with cream cheese). Then I got dressed and went outside with the kite. Unfortunately, the wind had died down too much. Boy and I sat on the ground (I tried to crouch, but that hurt my feet), so I pushed us both over. We had our backs to the sun and he finger combed the knots from my hair. We talked about frogs, the food chain (frogs eat cows!), and hairy legs. And hair. And I tried to twist his beard into two dreads, but his hair doesn't really lock well. We sprawled for awhile, I flew the kite for 30 seconds, and we sprawled some more.

We decided to get up and walk around the yard. We investigated different poops, brambles, and acorns. I picked a handful of garlic ramps for the dandelion green dish I'll make later. We picked up some trash, too, and found some crocuses over by the yucca grass under the willow oak. We picked up two sprouting white oak acorns. I brought them inside and put them in sphagnum moss/peat in cups. If they root, I'll keep them awhile, then see if any of my friends want oak trees. Boy wants to dig up a cedar seedling to see if we can train it to be a bonsai. *grin*

It's a good day, beautiful blue sky, gentle breeze, cool yet warm. So nice. Maybe we can go down to the river briefly. Oh, and the bats should be out today!! The only downer to today is all the spider hatchlings running about. Ick. EEEEVIL spiders of DOOM!

Sid is an adorable doggie.

The next time I go to Florida, I'm going to have to put up with Sid's owners just so I can have a chance to roll on the floor with Sid. Wow. I have lots of doggies I need to visit. Sid, DJ, Freckles, Amelia... There are doggies everywhere but with ME! *sob*

Maybe I need to go see Mom and Dad, so I can snuggle with Neil and laugh at Bailey when he sulks.

I'm still swooning over DJ and her sunbeam. That fang! It rivals Bucky's for cuteness!
A few nights ago, I wanted comfort food.

Folks who know me know that my comfort food involves potatoes and cheese. Mushrooms, too, but if I'm making something for boy to eat, I have to forgo them.

So...

I was super tired and achy. I asked boy to wash and slice some potatoes and to wash and peel two scarlet turnips and a parsnip. I chopped the turnips into chunks (one was HUGE) and sliced the parsnip. I chopped up a few baby carrots. Tossed 'em all into a casserole dish. Then I looked at the clock and saw that it was seven. We were hungry. So I added some water, and microwaved the veggies til they were mostly cooked. Then I added a white cheese sauce I had on the stove. I often use Mueller's pasta macaroni and cheese sauce recipe when cooking. I added onion powder (too tired to slice an onion and they make Tom cry, so I do it) and extra pepper... and garlic... We drained the veggies, tossed 'em back in the casserole, then poured on the sauce (I'd made it with organic white colby) and topped it with bread crumbs and organic white cheddar. Baked at 350 til brownish on top.

YUM. So good. I could've used less turnip and more parsnip, but I wanted to use the turnips (the parsnips will keep longer).

(btw, Mueller's Vodka sauce recipe is nice and basic, but I *always* add herbs so it doesn't taste like canned spaghetti w/sauce.)
This has come through on a couple different genealogy lists I read. I have NOT checked the veracity nor authenticity of this article. I just think it's interesting.

No bones about it: Grave robber is buried where he toiled )
Just went outside to see Iridium 45 flare near Procyon and TRMM coast under Orion.

The cat likes me. *sigh* I'm going to call the tenants who will be moving in to see if they want to consider keeping her and domesticating her. Otherwise, I'm going to continue earning her affections, then I'll take her to a vet to make sure she's healthy and try my hardest to find someone who takes in and domesticates feral felines. She's very soft and pretty and purrs like a dove coos. She just came right up to me tonight and has been looking in the screen door. She's letting me actively pet her. She's brushed by us on *accident* before and startled herself, but tonight she let me scritch behind her ears and rub her back.
This post is a lesson for [livejournal.com profile] explodingcat, who apparently didn't learn this kind of stuff in suburban schools.

This is a cat.
This is not.

The cat has a furry tail or no tail.
This is not a furry tail.

A cat has furry paws and likes to brush against things.
This has little pink hands and likes to dig between deckboards.

The cat has a compact face and jumps gracefully.
This has a narrow nose and has to scrabble and heave itself up onto the deck.

Now, I love you lots, [livejournal.com profile] explodingcat, but when one sees an opossum, one does not usually squeal delightedly: "OOOOH! BIG CUTE RAT!"

Yes. Your "pet" opossum is adorable and beady-eyed. I know you want me to install a bar so you can see it hang upside down by its tail. However, the opossum is a wild animal with sharper teeth than your feral cat.
I'm listening to Subculture Shock, [livejournal.com profile] xiane's goth show on WNRN. You can listen, too. :)
