Oct. 1st, 2002 09:47 pmmade another big pot of veggie soup today. this one has savoy cabbage, green beans, tomato juice, clove, chocolate, garlic, onion, carrot, potato, sage, pepper, wheat berries, urad dal, chana dal, green french lentils. YUM.
i also blended some spices and teas together. i'm drinking it with sweetened condensed milk. it smells like a spicy campfire:
smoky russian leaves (loose, organic, whole foods bulk), twinings orange pekoe ceylon (one bag), and an indian chai spice blend (cinnamon, fennel, pepper, cardamom, some other stuff), + some sugar. it smells like a spicy campfire. not bad, actually.
mmm, caffeine. i should just go take an antihistamine, but tea is so much yummier.

Date: 2002-10-01 08:27 pm (UTC)just saute the onion, celery, carrot, and garlic in olive or veg oil. toss in some cloves (if you want, i use two-three), a couple bay leaves. chopped cabbbage, roasted or not peppers. etc. okra, greenbeans, frozen or fresh... when the onions are transluscent, stir in chopped up chocolate (one square of hershey's baking choc = .5 oz). toss in either lentils (i used about one cup total, non-soft lentils) or soaked (or fresh) black eye peas. wheat berries, barley, whatever. :) add one big can (46 oz) tomato juice and a few coffee mugs of water (i added about five-six extra cups of water to today's soup b/c of the potatoes, wheat berries, etc). plenty of pepper, fresh ground, hold the salt (impedes the cooking of the beans) until the soup is served. for uncooked beans, it'll take a few hours, would make a good crockpot meal. if you use canned beans, it'll be done pretty quickly, but taste better the next day. ;)
and we were gonna stir in some sour cream, but ours went moldy.
it's quite yummy and wonderful on chilly days.
this was one of my favorite soups as a kid, when my mom occasionally added ground beef or turkey. but that cost money, so we usually just had veggies she'd canned/frozen over the summer. okra, green beans, blackeye peas, etc.

Date: 2002-10-01 09:03 pm (UTC)I love sour cream in soup. Especially in chili. Cottage cheese works just as well.
