i wanted to go hear control.org tonight, but i'm in a stay-at-home mood.

today, boy and i cleaned the kitchen and then wrecked it again...

dinner
from ivu.org:
okra masala
string beans and coconut koorma

and then...
chapatti
raita
leftover pide
leftover khatchapuri cheese filling (suluguni, farmer's cheese, butter)
pineapple
angelfood cake (okay, i bought that one at whole foods)

YUM.

boy says the dishes can wait until tomorrow.

we woke up early today to go into town to meet up with some friends. we went to the city farmer's market and hooked up with fresh veggies. mmmm...

afterwards, we walked around for a bit. when we wandered back to the house/car, boy and i took off to handle the rest of our day's shopping. we now have lots of fresh veggies, an étagère for the bathroom, and chocolate. good things, all of 'em. ;)

whole foods was absolutely swamped with one of their community day type festivals... loads of food samples, wine tasting, grilling, and friendly salespeople.

when boy and i finally managed to get back home, we put away the groceries and then crashed on the couch for a bit before attacking the kitchen. later, right as i was about to start dinner, i realized we were out of ginger, so we tried to buy some at the IGA.

our local IGA is pitiful. the pictures of green ham on the canned hams should pretty much warn one away from ANYTHING without an expiration date. the bagged carrots are slimy, the mushrooms look dusty, the spices resemble dust. and the IGA does not stock root ginger.

so, striking out at the IGA, we decided to drive halfway (most of the way, actually) into town to try the new food lion. i like this store. sure, it doesn't carry a lot of my necessities, but if i just need a bunch of parsley, a pint of ice cream, or a piece of gingerroot, it serves my needs quite nicely.

anyhow, we managed to get our ginger and convey it home. and dinner was made. oh, life is good.

and we got lots of rain here today. the driveway was puddle-full this afternoon. :D

i think that IGA's suck on the whole...unless it's the *only* gig in town, i never liked to go there.

on another topic...have you ever *grown* ginger? i have some in the back yard at the moment...not real sure what i'm doing with it, but i have these 3 shoots coming up that are about 4" high at the moment...and some of the regular wildlife here seems to think that the aroma of ginger is good, and keeps digging down to the root to get a nibble...they aren't hurting it, but it's disconcerting to go out to water in the morning and find a hole dug down to the ginger, with one tiny *chomp* missing. other than that, i'm just happy that it's sprouting. :)

IGA's are independent stores. They're just members of a larger association, AFAIK. it's kinda like Ace Hardware, or maybe ACE is a franchise.

anyhow, i generally prefer to give independent's my business. in the nearest IGA to my hometown, everyone bought at the bakery because they made the best cakes in town. of course, in a town with just one kroger (midwestern/southern chain), one marsh (indiana chain), and one IGA (becker's, we never called it IGA), none of the stores was significantly better than the other. the local IGA is the only grocery store for 15 miles in any direction... so they don't really have competition.
