as a kid, summertime moonrises were my favorite. i could run outside, jump off the deck, sprint under the palm trees, and walk up the very slight incline to the far northeast corner of the yard. and there would be the moon, just a few miles away, filling a good arm's width or more of the horizon. my neighbor's houses would look tiny in front of it. trees would barely brush the eye craters.

i still run outside when i see the moon looming large and orange. it was that way this morning as it set over the cow pasture. i could see it peeking between the cedar and juniper boughs.

so tonight, if they skies are clear and smoke-free where you live, go outside and look at the moon when it rises. then, if you're limber and not prone to falling over, do this for me.... promise?

okay...
here goes...

turn your back to the moon, spread your legs apart (shoulder width or so), then bend down and look at the mood from between your legs.

and tell me what you see.

my favorite early-childhood memory is from kansas, actually - sun setting behind us and the moon rising ahead of us.

Is this supposed to be done while nekkid or clothed?

that all depends on what you're risking by going nekkid.

you probably risk arrest.... and showing up on the front page of the richmond paper.

i risk mosquito bites in tender spots.

i think i'll try it clothed.
