doggie dog

A lot of our guilt over ticks has been alleviated. While Jericho has had Lyme, he may not have Lyme nephritis. Or he may. What's weird? Our vet was curious and (at no charge to us, just his own curiousity),did an ultrasound of Jericho's kidneys. He only has one. Well, he has two, but the second is tiny and probably non-functional.

Nobody ever caught this. We're Jericho's third owners (not counting the rescue he was at) . . . he's always been a thirsty dog, but never lethargic or a poor eater. The rescue had him thoroughly evaluated for diabetes because of his thirst, but apparently dog kidney function tests are very specific and he never met the criteria.

So the vet said we can just take it easy and see how he is tomorrow. I think we'll bring him home tonight. He won't sleep at the ER vet and I think rest is more important than IV fluids at this point. What's the point of getting IV fluids and meds if you don't sleep and rest? I think comfort and a safe space could really help him right now. If he throws a clot in his state, it's not like drastic measures are going to save him for any length of time, right?

I am catching up and I am so sad and so sorry that Jerry is going through this and that y'all are too. He is such an awesome dog.

Comfort and a safe space sound like just the things he could use right about now.

Wow. A tiny kidney. The things you find out about dogs. Kinda like Jim and Nita's dog, Lucky, but with different organs.

Hang in there, Jerry.

However bad he feels, he will be happier at home.

We feel for you all and are hoping he beats the odds.

I'm still pulling for you all. I think home is where he'd rather be. If he is still in need of fluid support you could probably give him sub cutaneous fluids. I'm not sure if they'd leave the IV needle in but they may if you ask and they can tell you how much fluid to give him that way. It's not as easy without a machine but it can certainly be done. I'm hoping for the best for you all.

We went through that and it is not so bad. It takes a little nerve to puncture your dog the first few times but it gets easier.

That is weird. I'm glad your vet decided to do the ultrasound.

I'm so glad you've got good reason to ditch the guilt. Severe illness in loved pet is bad enough without added guilt.

And if he'd be happy anywhere, it'd be with you lot, I know.

Rest is good. Especially at home with the people he loves and trusts.

Y'all are in my thoughts...I'm glad you are bringing Jerry home...I know that hospitals are MUCH less comfortable than being home, and would think that the vet would be the same way.

I know being home helps me feel more rested than in a hospital, so I'm sure the same will be true for Jerry as well. It's just easier to mend when you'ved loved ones around you.

If he likes ear rubbings, give him ear rubbings from me, okay?

It makes me sad reading this Sis. Seeing how I just got a dog too. Give Jerry a big hug and kiss for me. He's one of my favorites I've ever met.
