Things Ronan brings to us to eat:
Just Green Onions
bags of peppercorns

We dish some out for him. We kinda figured natural consequences--not everything is good to eat. It backfired. Dried green onions are tasty, it seems, and black/green/white peppercorns are even yummier. So at least once a day, we hear the familiar clip clop of a crawling baby bringing us a clamshell of dried herbs.

He gets mad when we don't dish out the huge bag of splenda (baking bag, bought when I was baking sugar-free goods for the man-beast's birthday) he drags out on a near daily basis.

I did this with coffee. A baby likes Starbucks coffee drinks, particularly the caramel macchiato but he also drinks my non-fancy coffee with half & half and sugar.
However, if given a straw, that will distract him enough to either let me finish the drink or hide it to go back to later. The baby does not need to be caffeinated.....

Natural Consequences

I'm beginning to think the natural consequences aren't so natural. I think they are learned behaviors for most people. And as adults who have unlearned this behavior, it's not terribly surprising to find that we have children who just don't have that. Imagine other parents who would totally *freak* if their child found peppercorns--oh my God, you're going to die if you eat that... Then they learn that those are scary and never go for them.

I regret quite a lot my lack of food adventures aged 1-16, and how long it took me to realize I really like spicy food (i.e. that spicy food != hot wings).

Lots of children in India (and I'm sure many places elsewhere!) eat spicy food...

Yes. We did, too. I had a really bitter latte. Let him have a sip. Forgot that this is the kid who fights me for my greens and pepper. *sigh*

one of my indian girlfriends tells me that she can't tolerate spicy spicy food and she's the only one of the children in her family that her mom didn't feel a hot pepper to as a small child. this is apparently a common thing and once the children become accustomed to the heat, they develop a taste for it. so i can totally see ronan just crawling on over with more peppercorns.

Bwahaha, yay for backfire of logical consequences!

My parents used those upon me as a child instead of 'punishment' and I hated them so, so very much (not the same thing exactly since I was older when they started, but still).

OH AND NEVER EVER give him cheescake before he's 3. My parents did when I was 18 mos or so, and I've loved it and had a sweet-tooth ever sense.
