unexpectedly productive

It's been really windy today. Our power has been flickering all day. We went out to do some shopping this afternoon and saw one stoplight that was out and a few that flickered.
Before we went out, Tom noticed that there was a chimney cap on the sidewalk outside our house. It was between our cars, but neither appeard to be damaged. Our neighbor wasn't home, so I tried the house opposite, but the tenant wasn't sure whether or not her chimney had a cap. So I went home and looked up the photos on the city assessor site. Sure enough, it was the elderly tenant across the street. I took it back over to her and we chatted for a few minutes.
Anyhow, our power went out and stayed out around 4:12 (that's the time that started flashing on the stove later). Without the net or the TV to distract us, we had to find things that would entertain us while the urchin watched. We ended up moving some holiday decorations to the stor-pod we have in the basement. Around 6, we decided to go to WFM to eat. The downtown Five Guys was out of power and I don't trust the one at Barracks, so we decided to play it relatively safe with Whole Foods.
Came home . . . still no power. I lit candles. Then I lit a LOT of candles in the kitchen. I commenced washing our backlog of dishes while Tom entertained the baby. Doorway Jumper + lively piano music = happy baby. When I finished the dishes, I joked to Tom that I should use the cordless drill and install the handles for our cabinets (you know, the ones we got back around Hallowe'en).
Well, that was a stroke of genius. So I got the drill, found the right bit (a marvelous bit of luck given the state of my tool box), and installed eight of the handles. Only another 20 to go.
Our power came on around ten of nine. Ronan is now asleep. I've had a snack and have a cup of decaf tea to warm my bones. The temp in the house hasn't gone below 64F, which is good. The furnace is back on, of course. With forecast lows in the mid teens tonight, we were looking at a night of taps left on a tiny bit. It's good to not waste water (well, I'd have caught it for plants).
I'm glad we have a gas water heater. And city water is awesome at times. When I was growing up, we had to use a generator for the pump if we wanted to get water (or melt snow). Then again, the water from the well back home tastes a million times better. I do miss having a gas stove in times like these. It would have been nice to cook at home by candlelight. It was too windy for our camp grill or propane stove.
