germs and lack thereof

I always thought those cart seat covers were kinda dorky. I mean, we need to build our immune systems. I'm cool with that.

So why did I buy a cover for my kiddo? Sure, it was on sale. And it has fishies!

But it's because everyone insists on using that goddamn sanitizer and I'm allergic to almost every variety, whether it's from fragrance or aloe or some other nastiness therein. And I just can't remember to keep a wet rag in my bag anymore, nor do I want to wear gloves when I'm dealing with Ronan. I'm tired of hives, eczema, and dyshidrotic eczema on my hands.

And despite my eagerness to build his immune system, the way he licks the cart is kinda gross.

So we have a cart cover.

I will admit that I have never put S. in the cart mostly because I am afraid Mr. Acrobat will climb out, even with the belt, but also, for some reason, that is one place where my germ-phobia really kicks in (we do have a cover though that my mom bought). I mean, we go to the children's museum regularly, as well as a farm and zoo, and he goes to music and gym classes with other kids and I am fine with all that, but for some reason I have a hard time with the carts. I don't use antibacterial soaps or other stuff like that, so his immune system has definitely been challenged--the cart thing is just something I need to get over, I used to put him in the Ergo and shop that way--now I push him in the stroller and use the basket as a cart. I limits me a bit, but it works well for now.

I usually wear him in the Ergo, but my orthotics were sent off for recovering. My feet and hips have been killing me and I just can't always shop *and* wear him when I'm already wearing him for a 2-5 mile walk nearly every single day (sans proper foot relief, at that!). And he really likes riding in the cart, which is the only reason I even keep doing it.

I don't blame you for being grossed out over the cart. Bleagh! And I'm not normally this phobic!

Today was spent walking home from campus. He was in the Ergo, zipped inside my hoodie. :)

It might provide some protection from random bits of wheat and soy as well. The previous parent may have been feeding her kid crackers or something.

Katie won't sit in the cart, though. She screams, and I have to carry her on my hip. If I could just remember to bring the sling, it might be easier...

I have to say... I'm all for getting their immune system a healthy start...but the grocery carts gross me out.

One thing for which I'm glad of using powered carts in stores - my lap makes a fairly good child seat.

On another note, do you know of any effective preventative and/or remedies for dishydrotic eczema flareups (besides utter avoidance of soap, water, alcohol or other cleaning agents)?

Make sure it's actually eczema and not dermatitis herpetiformis.

And dishydrotic eczema is triggered by all manner of allergens:
wheat, soy, parabens, aloe, fragrances, EDTA, lanolin, imid. urea, methylisothialazone (sp?), etc.

It's definitely dyshidrotic eczema aka pompholyx (the names are much more fun to say than it is to have). "Water blisters" run in the family, and I've had it/them as long as I can remember and am otherwise sensitive to a laundry list of stuff. Thx. :>
