Brandon is the natural carrot-top. I'm the natural calico-top. We don't know what Ronan has yet. His hair appears dark indoors, but outdoors we can see blonde and red hiding amongst the darker strands. Tom thinks the baby will get some version of my hair. I'm holding out for boy's curls.

Five weeks, one day.
Evening time.
In the evenings, Ronan sometimes gets fussy. We try everything--bouncing, burping, Gripewater, massage, feeding, diaper changes . . . anything. Twice now, we've by chance discovered what he wants--he wants to lie on his back on the floor. For the first few minutes, toys are cool. He wants one of us near him. He then drifts off after looking around for a few minutes. I cover him up because the AC blows straight out into this room. Afghan by Toni.
Evening time.

About the pacifier . . . . I do encourage Ronan to use *me* as a pacifier, but he hasn't learned how to comfort suckle yet. Sometimes he gets very angry when he just wants comfort and gets copious amounts of fiercely squirting milk. This is usually at a time when he's already fussy. He's also very gassy and very urpy, so if he full-on nurses for comfort, we end up with a very gassy, unhappy baby who constantly barfs. He likes his pacifier and has no problems with his latch on *me*, so we don't mind if he uses it. I don't withhold the boob ever--he's very clear about when he wants the boob and when he doesn't want milk at all.

I don't have a pacifier problem. They're easier to keep clean than thumbs are, and kids will suck thumbs. Boobs aren't always the right thing.

Only until your child becomes mobile--then they are dragged around on the floor, dropped, thrown, etc. S. has refused the pacifier for comfort sukcing since he was a couple of weeks old (he slept with one in the NICU) but he has enjoyed chewing on them since he first started teething and I welcome anything that helps with that pain. However, he crawls around with one in his hands, dragging it on the floor, then puts it back in his mouth. It is just our house and I clean the floors (and we don't wear shoes inside), but still, eww. But I've kind of given up on it. He puts every other toy in his mouth anyhow. He even tried to give the cat his pacifier--she wasn't interested.

From a mom (me) whose child will not comfort suck on anything other than her boob or her or daddy's finger, be very, very grateful your wee one likes the pacifier. Really. We have tried to get him to take one and he just won't. He chews on them and plays with them but he needs the boob or a parental finger for comfort. My mom laughed because S. now reaches over and grabs my hand and puts my finger in his mouth (not to mention how he attacks my boobs), as if he didn't have fingers of his own he could suck on. Ah well...

Sorry about the evening fussiness. I remember that all too well.

Great pics!

I am glad to hear you've found things to make Ronan happy when he's fussy! Although I'm not 100% convinced by the reasoning behind "the happiest baby on the block," the techniques are awesome and produce results quickly (the 5 "s"es: Swaddle, side/stomach, swing, shush, and suck). eh. Whatever makes the baby happy that's healthy I say.

I also let Daniel comfort nurse if he likes. I figure, what the hey, it makes him happy and it's certainly not bad for either of us. If he's on my left breast he doesn't get so much squirting; my right is a bit stronger in pumping out milk, I think. Weird.

love the pics and the writing. I breast fed too and I think it is such an awesome experience. He is growing and changing so quickly isn't he.
