My parents have two special needs Scotties. One is emotionally gimpy, the other is neuromuscularly gimpy.

Well, Neal managed to stumble across a patch of grass a few days ago and gorged himself. He then proceeded to vomit all night. Mom took him in to a local vet (they're in Zachary, LA) when he refused to touch the peanut butter containing his seizure meds. He's been on IV fluids for a few days, but the vomiting hadn't stopped. So they took some x-rays this morning.

And saw what appeared to be two rocks.

So . . . emergency surgery.

And they found two rocks. It appears he lacks the ability to tell food from not-food. Jericho has this shark-related instinct, so he doesn't usually eat non-food items (at least not after tasting them cautiously). Neal is not so lucky, or just doesn't care.

Dear Nealbert,
Rocks are not edible. Please don't do that again.
Love,

Thanks for your post, child-of-mine and for your encouraging comment, lightning rose. He isn't totally out of the woods yet, because he has a brain disorder and anesthetic is pretty hard on him, but the signs are all very good. I saw him before surgery today and held his head in my hands and told him he was going to get better and it would start today. I surely think he has to feel better already even with the surgery.

Oh dear. It sounds like a rough pet week around the world. :/

Yikes!

Harlie has a similar problem. She will happily ingest non-food items and get very sick--we have to be very careful about what she gets into. We joke that she has pica.

You might say Neal is our Obsessive compulsive, autistic, cerebellar abiotropic, epileptic wonder dog with deformed front legs who can no longer walk more than a few steps. But he is a sweetie who loves everybody and anything remotely resembling food.

Awww :(

How scary that your dog needed emergency surgery. Yeah some animals will eat anything and it can be seriously bad for them. I have to be careful with my cats and earplugs and string and curling ribbon, for instance and have had a few close calls.

It sounds like your dog is going to be ok though... I hope so.

Neal is my parents' dog, not mine. They're fulltime RVers. I hope he'll be okay. His recovery will be complicated by his other health problems.
