Jan. 13th, 2005 12:52 amCall me old-fashioned, but there are certain things I don't like my computer to do.
I don't like it when the display suddenly displays pinhole dots all over and then refreshes and freezes. I don't like it when I have to do an emergency reboot and it doesn't make the Mac start-up sound right away.
I'll deal, though. I'll hand it off to my husband so he can plug it in. I'll go into the kitchen and make crackers out of gouda, butter, sorghum flour, and potato flour. At some point--probably while waiting for the oven to heat up--I'll wander back near the mac. I'll notice that it's constantly refreshing SNOW.
I'll attempt to restart it. I'll attempt to boot it in safe mode. I'll note that the screen goes dark. In other words--no light whatsoever. I'll attempt to turn it off blind and seemingly succeed. I'll remove the new Airport card, just in case. I'll replace the keyboard and start it up. It makes the right sounds, but no screen. Even the undocumented glowy apple feature isn't lit. I'll think horrid things about Apple displays and I'll go ask boy where the hell the OSX CDs are. I'll discover they're at the other house. I'll contemplate running it to another monitor, then realize we have no other compatible monitor.
I'll fret and worry. Attempting to reboot gets me the happy sound, but no visual.
Letting it sit and then running a finger over the trackpad results in the hard disk making wake-up clicks, but no visual.
And, once again, I'll curse this infernal machine and wonder why I expect anything different. After all, back in the old days, this was de rigeur, especially if no data had been saved in the last five minutes.
I guess I'm not so old-fashioned, after all.
I am, however, upset.

Date: 2005-01-13 02:38 pm (UTC)And which model iBook is this?
How old is it?
And did you do the logic board repair yet?
If not, let me know, I have connections to get it done under warranty.
Re: Or, more suspect...
Date: 2005-01-13 03:38 pm (UTC)We did not get the logic board/ethernet card problem fixed. We figured it would be cheaper to just go wireless, because everything we've been hearing suggests that the logic board fix would be expensive. We installed the wireless card. It worked fine for several hours. Then, the above series of events happened.
It's still powered on. It seems to be working. It's making all the same delicate harddrive noises I would expect if I wake it up from sleep mode. But the screen is dead.
Could the installation of the airport card and the screen dying possible be related? Seems unlikely. But it's quite a coincidence. If it is only the screen and the rest of the machine is working, I should be able to display on an external monitor (if I had one)? If so, before I do anything I think I need an external monitor just so I can back up some stuff and get some important financial numbers off there (great timing financially what with all the house buying and stuff).

so i have to go into tysons this weekend for service and hopefully it's just unseated as the tech support woman said because if not, it's not under warrenty.
:o/ hope yours works out!

Date: 2005-01-14 12:45 am (UTC)Jocelyn thinks this sounds suspiciously like a known problem with this particular iBook? A problem that was being fixed free of charge due to the machine being a lemon? And also the window of opportunity for this fix is apparently over?
She's probably going to call Apple and yell at them. Maybe she can scare them into helping us or at least feeling sorry for us. But we may be interested in your connections. Thanks.
