Farmer's market was lovely today. I wore my lobster claw deelyboppers (I should make a userpic with them) and got lots of comments. I don't really expect comments when I wear deelyboppers, but if I must have them, I prefer the kind that sound like, "I LOVE YOUR CLAWS!"

We got loads of veggies: crookneck squash, white/green pattypan squash, fresh blackeye peas, okra, yellow wax beans, onions, eggs and meatballs for boy, zucchini, green pepper, some interesting larger heirloom tomatoes (my ripe tomatoes are all grape/cherry size)... we picked up a prescription at CVS, bought a couple books at Daedelus, and came back home. It was good to see our favorite farmers and chitchat. I also bought a luscious slice of gluten-free (soy-free, too!) angelfood cake from the hungarian lady. That was *so* good.

Came home and rested, then went out to attack the yard. Our landlord was miffed that I never cleared the turf I put on the walk (rather than kill more grass, when I cleared my garden space, I put the sod on the backyard walk), so boy cleared that and filled in a low spot in the alley. I'm sure that's illegal, but I don't care.

I pulled up most of the radishes, daikon, and other brassicacea that went to seed. The stinkbugs rebelled and called forth the mosquito hordes. I stayed long enough to tie up longer tomato vines and a sunflower, then fled inside and found some antihistamines. When the hives, nausea, and pain subside, I'll take a cool shower and maybe do some work around the house... unless I got enough bites to trigger a costo flare. *crosses fingers*

At the very least, I can make some soup, though I need a couple more things from WF or IY.

Ooooh, just remembered, I harvested a late, but quite edible daikon root. I should go grab that. It would go nicely in the soup, perhaps. Or maybe I can just saute it with some cabbage and rice.

What does daikon taste like? Anything someone with a boring vegetable background like me could relate to?

It tastes like a very mild white radish or turnip. It's good pickled.

I'm probably the only person in town wearing lobster claw deelyboppers, so probably. ;)

I'm collecting recipes for vegetable soup that I can use to break my fast. The 2nd day I get to drink the broth and the 3rd day I can have the veggies. I'd be interested in suggestions on yummy combos of veggies.

I <3 Daedelus and can't wait to go to the Farmer's Market when I come back. Hopefully they'll still be around...
