Question to those who wear prescription sunglasses...

I've never worn prescription sunglasses. I normally wear contacts (with non 'script sunglasses) and have done so for nearly 15 years. This is my first pair of prescription sunglasses. The lenses are polarized and decently dark.

I feel like I'm seeing in 2-D--my depth perception is off. I can't figure out if this is something I just need to get used to or if I should have the glasses checked to ensure they're the proper prescription. My normal eyeglasses are fine--no depth perception problems. They are a *slightly* weaker prescription, but not by much. And my sunglasses are the same 'script as my contacts now, I believe. I should doublecheck. (Sometimes I have a stronger prescription for eyeglasses because I tend to wear them at night or when my eyes aren't focusing well due to CFIDS-related fatigue).

Anyhow, the 2-D thing is weird. I think I started to adjust, but I switched to my contacts, anyhow. I wanted my peripheral vision back.

When I wore glasses (near-sighted) I had no problems switching between regulars & shades.

It could be the difference in prescriptions, but I'd have them double checked to be sure.

First, I am not a doctor.

I am quite myopic (-9 diopters); wore contacts for 10 years 1990-2000; then completely switched back to glasses. Switching back takes some time if you never used glasses for a long period. Then, I personally is extremely sensitive to the way the glasses are made wrt the distance between the pupils. Out of 3 pairs done in 3 years - only one is REALLY good and fits nicely. I've never been able to get used to the second; and the third (with anti-reflective and yadda-yadda lens) is so-so; - I got it in late December and by now (with minor bending and twitching) I am getting used to it, seems like. Bending and twitching is hard, considering that the frame is titanium ;)

What I always do is asking the optitian to double-check the distance between the lens centres when the glasses are manufactured for me.

Additionally, if you have astigmatism on top of myopia, you might want to double-check the so called "cylindric" measurements of the freshly made glasses. This parameter compensates for the deviation from perfect round form of your body's optics, and misalignment of the glasses (e.g. manufacturing error) can probably feel like you are describing. Also, astigmatism sometimes fluctuates within some margin - e.g. with my eye it can float a little bit away from the time of eye exam to the time of getting the glasses.

Polarisation might add some effect too, but I doubt that your 2-D comes from there. But again, I am not a doctor.

I tend to end up with more eye-dominance issues while wearing glasses than with contacts, which does lead to depth perception issues. It doesn't happen so much with nearby objects, but beyond 15-20 meters out, I do need to concentrate to lock thing in.

In my case, I blame too much stereography.

Peripheral vision is the main reason I wear my contacts 99% of the time I'm awake. I did try to wear my glasses more this year, and when I got my new pair, the cute optician-boy told me that since I have an astigmatism, it can make switching back and forth from contacts to glasses a bit more difficult, because of focusing issues. He told me to wear the glasses only for the first couple of days to help my eyes adjust. And it seemed to work. Don't know if that's worth much, but there it is. :-)
