I took boy to his allergist today... After all the testing was done, we discovered that he's allergic to just about every local tree, grass, weed, and mold. That's no biggie, nor the dust mites. We're used to those because they all tend to knock me over pretty quickly.

The foods, though... Rye, salmon, tuna, mushrooms, chicken, and... corn. I moaned when I saw that... the nurse said "hey, be happy it's not wheat." i just looked at him and asked, "do you know how often corn pops up? at least wheat is labelled, no matter how ambiguously. rice dusted with cornstarch doesn't list corn on the label. toilet paper doesn't list corn. kleenex, vinegar, dextrose, modified food starch, ..."

Ah, well. We've plenty of food allergy experience. Even so... corn is going to drive me batty.

The doctor wants to do food challenges for eggs (negative skin reaction, but he had a rather nasty egg experience that resulted in an ER visit), chicken (was a weak positive), and tuna (eventually, not anytime soon). He might be able to tolerate the fish if it's cooked (he's a sushi fan, but...), but we're not going to try that until his system recovers.

i've got a headache, but i think i should go help him find something to eat. then we're off to hang out with [livejournal.com profile] ashbet and co.

Oh dear

Ugh, that is a tough one! A couple years ago, I thought wheat and/or corn might be on my allergy list and that was a very rough couple months til I gave up the battle. Sounds like that's not an option here, so best of luck and creativity with getting boy's diet under control!

WTF is a food challenge? "Tom vs. Tuna fish! Who will kick whose ass? Only on pay per view!"

for the food challenges, tom has to eat the food and not die. ;) actually, in order to be cleared of the food allergy, he can't react at all. with the egg, we'll hardboil two eggs, take them to the doctor's office, and tom will eat a tiny shred. after ten minutes or so, if there's no reaction, he'll eat two shreds... and so forth, until he's either had a reaction or eaten both egg whites.

tasty, eh?

That is just not fucking fair.

Not only is corn as ubiquitous as soy, it's as if you two will never be able to eat together again!

corn is more ubiquitous than soy. it's truly evil. almost every single medication contains corn (including the antihistamines boy is supposed to be taking). toothpaste... shampoo... it's evil... and, in this country, almost entirely GM.

we can still eat lebanese food. ;) not every restaurant, of course, but a few. and i can cook corn-free. it's just annoying.

and boy, of course, is convinced that the world will never be right-side-up again.

very different perspectives... boy and i.

That should help you out a wee bit.

And are you fully sure they said corn and not KORN? If thats the case, you need to keep boi far far away from Brad & Brandon. :p
As for "Tom vs. Tunafish", I put ten bucks on Tom for the KO.

fortunately, i already have a sizeable repository of corn allergy links. i keep them on hand for people who post to food allergy lists i read. i also email a lady who's one of the more vociferous corn allergics in my little net.realm. ;) thanks, though
