please.... not corn.

I took boy to his allergist today... After all the testing was done, we discovered that he's allergic to just about every local tree, grass, weed, and mold. That's no biggie, nor the dust mites. We're used to those because they all tend to knock me over pretty quickly.
The foods, though... Rye, salmon, tuna, mushrooms, chicken, and... corn. I moaned when I saw that... the nurse said "hey, be happy it's not wheat." i just looked at him and asked, "do you know how often corn pops up? at least wheat is labelled, no matter how ambiguously. rice dusted with cornstarch doesn't list corn on the label. toilet paper doesn't list corn. kleenex, vinegar, dextrose, modified food starch, ..."
Ah, well. We've plenty of food allergy experience. Even so... corn is going to drive me batty.
The doctor wants to do food challenges for eggs (negative skin reaction, but he had a rather nasty egg experience that resulted in an ER visit), chicken (was a weak positive), and tuna (eventually, not anytime soon). He might be able to tolerate the fish if it's cooked (he's a sushi fan, but...), but we're not going to try that until his system recovers.
i've got a headache, but i think i should go help him find something to eat. then we're off to hang out with
ashbet and co.

Date: 2002-01-25 06:31 pm (UTC)Not only is corn as ubiquitous as soy, it's as if you two will never be able to eat together again!

and boy, of course, is convinced that the world will never be right-side-up again.
very different perspectives... boy and i.
