i giggled, laughed, and cringed my way through Once Upon A Time In Mexico...

the bad thing about going to movies alone is that i don't have a shoulder to bury my face in and nobody to look down at me and laugh when i slide down and fall out of my seat.

despite my solitude, i liked the film. i really like Rodriguez' sense of humor and his whole damn style.

[livejournal.com profile] wdalphin, shut up about spy kids 3 already, eh? ;)

it's the third in a series, but it's very good as a standalone film. it's quite gory and violent, but the colors are lush and the imagery is amazing. there's a lot of dark, dark humor involved.

when you get down to it, it's a folk tale. you've got the mythical hero who lives a life of violence to save good people from the bad guys. he's supposedly unstoppable, has lost his love and feels he is dead--all that... there are a lot of mystical elements in it that folks who just go to see a gangster film might miss.

are you familiar with El Mariachi and Desperado? I think the motivations of Banderas' character are easier to understand having seen the first two films, but Rodriguez is pretty good about building things up for folks who might've not seen them.

nope, not familiar with those other films (i've seen about five movies in the past five years, i kid you not).

it sounds pretty intriguing, though.

desperado came out in august or september of 1995... el mariachi was even earlier, but i'm pretty sure it didn't show widely in the US... it's usually found in the Foreign or Independent film sections of video stores, if at all.

it is *very* violent... if that bothers you, you might want to make sure you have someone with big arms/shoulders to hide behind. ;)
