i forgot about the ER visit i had between the fishing lure incident when i was two and friday night.

spring, i think... 1994. i was a senior in high school. the power was out. i was downstairs in one of the lounges, fooling around with some friends. we were doing silly somersaults and such.

i did a diving front roll... thought i had room for a second.

came smack up into the edge of a table.

now this table had a little board that ran between the legs, right underneath the tabletop. (not this table, but the board is the same)

the bridge of my nose hit the bottom edge of that board pretty damn hard.

my nose started gushing immediately. the force of the impact sent me backward, where my head hit the floor, rebounded, hit again, then someone grabbed me. blood everywhere. my jeans were already soaked. the brand-new carpet had a few lovely dinner plate size stains on it. i jumped and ran for the nearest bathroom (down two hallways, other side of courtyard, men's room). i ran in (startling some guys at the sinks) and leaned over the sink, washing my hands and reaching for paper towels. by that time, some of my friends had caught up with me.

i looked in the mirror and decided i needed ice. one of my friends volunteered his fridge. we're both RAs. girls aren't allowed on the guys' floor at all. we hesitate for a nanosecond before running up the stairs. his fridge is empty. so is his neighbors. we run into an RC (resident counselor, like an RA in college, but with parental authority over students)... he starts to rebuke us for breaking the rules when he shines the flashlight on my face and sees all the blood. he escorts us into his suite, sends me to the bathroom with some towels, and fetches me a bag of ice. orders me to stay put in his living room.

after awhile, i get bored and call the front desk to say i'm coming down.

two hours later, the lights are back on and the bleeding is still going strong (i have a history of bleeding forfuckingever)... so my RC decides i need to go to the hospital. it's basically next door, so we go over... they take xrays... the bleeding slowly trickles to a stop... give me some gauze, decide i'm not broken, send me home.

i have a very slight scar over the bridge of my nose... a little line.

and my blood stains were on the Jeep Lounge carpet until a couple years ago when they renovated. it was always fun to walk in as an alum and stand there with a friend, saying "ah, yes. i remember when that bloodstain was fresh..." then we'd walk away quietly... busy ourselves with talking with some professors.

i still laugh when i feel that little scar. it's not very noticeable. most people assume the bump in my nose from that accident. others assume it's genetic, since my dad has one very similar. my dad's bump is artificial... and mine is probably artificial, too, caused by wearing heavy glasses at a young age. i also have very rigid nose cartilage. my nose doesn't smush or wiggle much. i'm lucky i didn't cram it right into my brain that day. as i said--i'm a dumbass.
