drain woes

i did talk boy into going to walmart last night on our way (um... out of our way) to the dawning, as [livejournal.com profile] hellsop suggested. unfortunately, walmart does not carry drain snakes here. they did have a ZipIt, which we decided would work nicely on the tub drain (hair hair hair, did i mention we have hair?). we took off for the club, had lots of fun.

this morning, i've tried running hot water down the kitchen sink. it drains slowly... and seems to back right up into the bathroom sink. ugh. i just poured boiling water down the bathroom sink, in the slim hope that whatever is in there has some grease and will melt and slide on through.

next option--plunger. this might not work so well, as the bathroom sink drain is up against a steep side of the bowl.

i'm tempted to get an expanding washer thingy and use the garden hose...

we shall hit Lowe's for a drain snake sometime soon, i think.

failing all of this (or if i can't get the p-drain/j-pipe back together), i shall call the landlord, who will hopefully be able to help without having to call a plumber.

the drains in this house are all horrid. the tub drain has a sharp 90 degree bend about two inches down. the kitchen sink and bathroom sink share a drain. the washer sometimes backs up rinse water if we're using any other water-devices in the house.

the toilet (knock on wood) hasn't been an issue here. i'd rather have toilet issues. i got damn good at plunging in the last house (low-flow toilet, old TINY pipes, septic tank, etc).

the ZipIt does work very well on the tub, by the way. i asked boy attempt to clean out the drain last week. it was no longer backing up today, but he still got LOTS of hair out. i asked him to do it once a week. we've tried using a hair guard on that drain, but it made water back up worse during the shower. i hate standing in scummy water.
