fishy ingredient...
Aug. 26th, 2003 11:25 amIck...
Fish ingredient might be introduced to a variety of foods. I could care less about the bacon, fish, forumula, and ham. I want my OJ and bread left alone.
Fortunately, I doubt I really have to worry. It's not like I can buy most store-bought bread, anyhow.
I really don't think enrichment is the solution to widespread malnutrition. I think education is a much better option. I'd say that those who can't be bothered to eat properly will just fall victim to natural selection, but I'm not sure that's fair to those who are too poor to buy enough food.

Date: 2003-08-26 08:32 am (UTC)No, the solution to problem is encouraging responsible breeding in overcrowded countries and in nutritional studies NOT being influenced by lobbying. That won't solve it completely but it sure as hell will go a long way toward helping. Cold as it may sound I would much rather donate money to an org that provides birth control in countries where children are starving then to send money to feed them. That just furthers the process, more survive to have more children they can't feed, etc. etc. etc. I know how cold hearted and mean that sounds, but lets face it, the current approach isn't working, is it?

Date: 2003-08-26 08:53 am (UTC)It's probably cheaper to use fish, too.

Date: 2003-08-26 09:36 am (UTC)But.... what really bothers me about transmogrifying tuna oil to DHA is the source of the tuna oil: tuna. From the ocean. In which the human population has dumped lead, mercury, cadmium, PCBs, and all sorts of other nasty nasty nasty nasty heavy elements and molecules that have been shown to really fuck up brain development and all other sorts of things in children. By adding lead et al to most foods susceptible children eat, we're damning them by retarding and stunting their growing bodies. Go us!
Greenland, now.
Henna!

The henna I use for my hair would not be appropriate for mehndi. You want much fresher henna for that.
Re: Henna!
Date: 2003-08-26 11:23 am (UTC)you've helped muchly! oh, and now I know why I broke out after someone applied "black henna"

Re: Henna!
Date: 2003-08-26 11:32 am (UTC)Did you turn in the guy who used the ppd-laced henna? Some jurisdictions/countries are starting to pass laws against it.

Date: 2003-08-26 09:26 pm (UTC)I think companies should be making foods simpler, not more complex. Goddammit. If people want/need extra nutrients, that's what supplementation is for. You know these super-enriched foods aren't going to get to third world countries where there are the most nutritional deficiencies.
Speaking of simpler foods, I found a brand of salad dressing today that doesn't have soybean oil and is gluten-free (Annie's Naturals). Thanks for reminding me that Kroger has a tiny organic section so I don't always have to trek up to the northside.

Date: 2003-08-27 03:27 am (UTC)There's no quick and easy answer, but it's not going to correct on it's own if no one tries to start the education process.
