From the profile:
This community has been created as a petition to the maintainers of Livejournal.com to request listing more than male and female as gender options in the information / profile listings. This community is for people of all genders.

Livejournal.com currently has close to 1,000 users who list transgender as a personal interest, (and this list is growing daily!) There are also well over 200 communities that address gender variance and relevant identities. Even if you identify as strictly male or female, your membership shows support for other people being able to express their gender identity. After all, Livejournal.com is about being able to express yourself.

By joining this community, you are effectively signing this petition to show support for listing more than two gender options in livejournal profiles / info.



I would most like to see a self-defining/undefining gender option in LJ.

I don't like the word, "gender," at all. "Gender" is a psychological/cultural term and has nothing to do with a person's anatomy. It seriously irritates me when services such as LiveJournal ask me to choose whether my "gender" is "male" or "female." Biologically, my sex is female. There is no question about that. ;) But I don't necessarily fit into the perfect pigeonhole of what a woman's place in society is "supposed" to be. To say that my "gender" is female would be to say that I am embodying a particular role that a woman "should" take on.

I might have to join this community and point that out.

i'm studying sex and gender in school stories at the moment. the sex is what the author says the characters are - male or female - but the gender is often different. i certainly don't have male OR female gender in the psychological sense. somewhere between the two, probably. but it might be something different.

OTOH, at least they're having this discussion . . . I'd like to see something like "M/F/T/I/O" (Male/Female/Trans/Intersex/Other) as options, at the very least . . .

What do you feel that the checkboxes should be? Keep in mind that this is a multiple-choice quiz, so you can't necessarily offer *every* option . . . even M/F/O would be a start!
