aaaaugh.

i'm going to go nuts. we've been getting 2-5 calls an hour for a couple days now. sometimes we'll go for hours without one, then it starts up again. there's never any noise or sound on the other line. boy thinks it's one of those telemarketer bots that just *collects* numbers than have an answer. i don't know. he always starts hitting the #key to make noise at the silence and once the noise came *back*. it's not a fax noise or anything like that.

we just watched the Angel finale and 3-4 calls came while we were watching it. We didn't bother picking up the phone and the answering machine just had a dial tone. so i don't know if someone was trying to call, but our family members know to leave messages.

maddening.

to my friends. if you try to call and don't get an answer, LEAVE A MESSAGE. don't try to call again 15 minutes later and then again and then again. sometimes we're home and don't want to be disturbed.

And I only turn my cell phone on when I leave the house. Don't leave a message on it if you want to get in touch with me right away. I don't use it at home and I leave it in my purse, turned off. I'll only get the message the next time I leave the house, IF I turn the phone on.

I've good luck with the TeleZapper. Since I started using it about three months ago I only get a couple of telemarketing calls a month instead of several per week.

It's your phone, you answer it if you like.

I want a phone smart enough to give distinctive rings when recognized numbers come up, take a setting that says "only ring if there's a caller ID showing up", and send the rest to the answering machine without making a sound.

I think there might be programmable phones like that, but they're expensive. I know that I've seen devices sold where you can program certain numbers with a distinctive ring pattern.

I had a friend who used to call and call and call. He'd think I should be home from school by then, and just keep calling every 5 minutes until I'd pick up the phone. It was maddening since that was the only time I was alone in the house and I wanted to practice the piano in peace.

Confronted, he denied it was him. Oddly, though, it was him everytime I'd get frustrated and answer.

I should have kicked him in the balls.

We have gotten almost no calls since we got an unlisted number, FYI.

There is also a "do not call list" that you can get placed on . . . I need to get offline so I don't have time to look it up right now, but do a Google search for "National Do Not Call Register" and it should come up.
