When I had a root canal, it was on a tooth that was in rather advanced stages of decay (the dentist referred to it as a 'hot tooth'), so I had to be injected several times with anesthetic, because the standard dose wasn't enough to keep my nerves from feeling the drill (we learned that through trial-and-error method... which was NOT fun)... even then, it wasn't foolproof, as the drill would occasional hit a nerve, causing me to twitch in agony. Also, the smell of bone burning away under the drill is quite nauseating. The running of pipecleaner-looking things up and down my root was just odd, but not painful.
Since the root canal was done over the course of 2-3 sessions, I got to experience this multiple times. yay!
This is obviously not a 'comfort story', which is why it is being posted here.
personally, i thought my root canal was cake. a little swollen after the initial work, but really the procedure just has a bad reputation. I'd tell your friend not to worry too much.
