Dear Advice Person,

I'm married to someone who squeals at random intervals and announced, "My friend! I've found my friend!"

Sometimes he just squeaks and points.

His friend is a box elder beetle.

Mind you, we have NO box elder trees near the house.

This beetle (or various generations) wanders around the house. I'm pretty sure I've heard boy refer to it as "my precious" when I'm not around.

Should I be worried?

Signed,
Not Jealous of a Bug

Dear Not Jealous,

It is a well known fact that people live longer and happier lives when they have a pet. People also sometimes form unusual attachments to their pets, even to the exclusion of other people.

The fact that boy's pet is a beetle is in itself unusual, but his behavior towards this pet is not.

As long as the beetle does not become a hinderance to your relationship, I would say that boy's behavior is acceptable (though perhaps not entirely normal).

I hope this eases your mind.

As for the existence of this particular beetle in your house, I have forwarded your question to my associate, Dr. In Charge of Bug Questions.

Sincerely,
Dr. Ask Me Anything And I'll Make Up An Answer
