ahhhh, home.

did the shopping. picked up more sourdough, so i already had some buttered toast with marmite. mmmm, marmite.

and i just made my mother's cranberry salad for the first time ever. i have no clue where she got the recipe, but she's made it as long as i can remember. i always refused to eat it as a kid, because i always watched her make it. there's something about cast iron food grinders , cranberries, and the image of mom's fingers pushing the cranberries down. i was never convinced that we weren't eating fingers-salad, rather than cranberry. ;)

i finally tried it one year when she made a point of making it vegetarian for me. and i kinda liked it. so i decided that this year, i'd make it.

Cranberry Salad

1 lb. cranberries
1 orange
2 apples
2- 3-oz. jello (i use SuperFruitz, by Hain, because I'm vegetarian. I chose raspberry. mom used cranberry and lemon jello, though she sometimes uses cherry)
2 cups sugar
2 C. boiling water.

Grind cranberries, orange, apples and add sugar. Let set.
Add jello to boiling water. Mix all together and chill until firm.

you grind the orange peel and all. i cored the apple. tom did most of the grinding, because i don't have the strength (thanks, cfids) nor the pain tolerance (thanks, CTS and fibro) for it.

tom licked the platter we ground the fruit out onto clean.

the salad is in the fridge now.

My grandma used to let us make the cranberry relish with the grinder -- cranberries, whole oranges, and handsful of walnuts, all run through the grinder on "coarse" then tossed with sugar, and let sit for a few hours.

*sigh*

Happy childhood memories. :)

If I got a meat grinder, now, it'd be to make cranberry relish twice a year.

i bought my grinder last summer, before tom's parents moved. the neighbors were having a moving sale and the wife had it marked at 5 bucks. she gave it to me for three.

this is the first time i've used it. i could have used the food processor, but this is more special. ;)

Thats Grandma Schrock's famous recipe!!! Do you also recall the gingerale salad? THere was just something about gingerale, mayonnaise, jello and walnuts that made me feel like wretching so I never ever really ate any, I just would poke at it and make weird faces and get in trouble.

yeah. when i tell folks that we really *WERE* served food like this stuff here (http://www.lileks.com/institute/gallery/index.html), they never believe me.

the trick to the cranberry salad to to eat sizeable bites. if you eat tiny bites, you end up with a bit of orange peel or straight cranberry.
