i have a very ripe mango i want to eat.

i've never bought a whole mango before.

but i've heard the skin can make one break out.

since fruits that don't make normal people break out DO make me break out, what do i do?

i can let boy do this, but he is susceptible to poison ivy. should i find some gloves for him? peel it, then cut it?

help me! :D

mango skin contains an oil very similar to the oil in poison ivy that causes reactions. i was immune to poison ivy for most of my life. i managed to break out from it when i was 20, but that was the first (and the last) time. and i was really asking for it that time, to boot. ;) it's odd--i was the only person in my family *not* allergic to it as a kid.

i'm not allergic to mangos. i have mango lassi quite frequently and am usually fine with it. i eat frozen mango all the time and make frozen mango custard from canned mango. ;)

now papaya... that one i'm definitely allergic to. anaphylactic, even.

but mangoes and cashews make me happy. i've just never prepared one.

I don't know what all you're sensitive to, but generally the skin makes people break out who are allergic to mangos. Have you eaten a mango before - did you have a reaction to it?

I'm really prone to poison ivy but have no other terrific skin-irritation allergies (except some really cheap horrid [stage] make-up, oh, and latex) and have no problems with mangos.

okay, that wasn't really very helpful at all. I'd recommend slicing it in quarters down to the seed, and then carefully stripping off the skin. You (or he) should be able to accomplish that without too much handeling of the actual skin, if you put it on a countertop or dish to do so.

You've probably already resolved this, but...

I am horrifically allergic to poison ivy and have sensitive skin in general. Mango skin doesn't bother me at all. If someone picked the thing up and didn't react, I should think that person would be okay. (You could still wear gloves to cut it, but I would have thought you would have reacted when picking up the fruit.)

Slice into quarters off the pit, scoop out of the skin, slurp, and enjoy over the sink. :)

I think you need to invite me over to cut it up for you, and then I'll feed you both with a spoon. And some for me, of course. Yum!
