Wednesday at home.
Sep. 20th, 2006 04:58 pmWe went out to run a few errands today and now I'm resting some more. We managed to buy a new spark plug for the mower, along with new line for the weedwhacker. Got some food, some coffee, a new omelet pan.
Anyhow, the dog is trying to be super cuddly, which is not a good thing when he's just been treated with his monthly pesticide (Frontline TopSpot). I have some pretty nasty neurotoxic reactions to it and can't touch him for a few days. Naturally, he wants to lay upside down in my lap or nuzzle up against me. I keep calling boy in to cuddle the poodle.
Tom's out weedwhacking. The yard isn't out of control so much as the fringes outside the fence. Later, he'll attempt to learn about small engines and see if he can't fix the lawnmower. We both regret growing up in a time when boys (or girls) didn't have to take small engines classes. Being able to service one's lawnmower would be a handy skill. Ah, well, hands-on learning works for the boy.
The poodle has been very happy to return to his basket of toys and the comfy leather couch. He didn't try to climb up on the bed last night, either, which is a very good thing. He was content with his own bed.
We really loved our vacation. We also really love being home. Home is a mess and needs cleaning. Locking up a house for three weeks in late summer in Virginia means that the mold and mildew gets the upper hand, so we need to haul out the bleach and simple green and attack hidden corners and plumbing fixtures. I wish I could air out the house, but the air is thick with allergenic nastiness, so the doors and windows must stay closed for another month or two. We also have several limbs down in the backyard and dying garden plants in need of composting.
The vine borers killed off my pumpkin vines, so I'll have to buy my Luminas this year. Next year, I might try to plant mums and marigolds near the pumpkin vines.
I might go see what I can salvage out of the garden. The basil hasn't gone to seed yet, so if I snip the flowers, I should have another month of yummy herbalicious goodness. I think the oregano is done, but the thyme, sage, and lemon verbena look perfect. I saw some monster summer squash--I hope they aren't too woody. I might roast them with some quinoa and fresh herbs and loads of butter.
