recent pics, parents' visit
Aug. 19th, 2004 12:22 amMy hair has been re-hennaed.
Tom and I decided to hike to Crabtree Falls from the top this past Sunday. It was a lovely wooded hike, though the falls were barely trickling. I'm glad we didn't take my parents to the top last week. That said, it was cool, lovely, and gorgeous out. Though, I did need my hair re-hennaed. I made faces at boy. It's a shame--my hands must be quite unsteady because very few of my pictures came out at all.
We passed a lot of dead hemlocks. Most of the hemlocks in this region have died as a result of a wooly adelgid infestation. It's horrifically sad. Some virgin hemlock forests, trees alive when Europeans first arrived on this coast, are now dead.
Oh, and the drive to Crabtree Meadows? I'm not trying it again until I have a vehicle with high clearance and four-wheel drive. I forded two creeks (okay, technically, the creeks forded the road) and endured a steep grade with horrific drop-offs. We had to turn the heat on high and open all the windows to keep the temp level down (this car can handle a 15% grade at speed with AC and no temp issues). And did I mention the road was rock(s)? I should have. When the surface wasn't cobble-size gravel, it was bedrock. Yeah. It's a good thing we're planning on replacing the front tires. I'm glad we managed to get THAT wear out of them. So, yes, you *can* take a 1995 Buick Regal up Maintop and The Priest, but should you? Hell, NO.
Anyhow, my parents visited recently. They camped out at Misty Meadows, on 250, with the boys. You can see the ramp up the steps. Neal requires the ramp to get into the motorhome, though he still needs help. Bailey, of course, still hates cameras.
Boy waited for them on a gorgeous day. Yes, that's his office.
We did visit the lower cataract of Crabtree Falls with my parents. If you think I'm bad about making faces, I come by it naturally. Aren't they cute? Dad generally has that, 'I'm up to no good' expression on his face.
My boy, on a footbridge over the Tye.
really cool fungus on a tree at Montebello Fish Hatchery.
Humpback Rocks, seen from the visitor center. Boy and I have hiked that many times. It's not a hike for those with achy bones or gimpy hearts, so we didn't go up with my parents.
For further reference:
Crabtree Falls hike earlier this spring.
Humpback Rocks hike in January.
Montebello Fish Hatchery, last November.
