Sep. 11th, 2003 10:24 pmThe headline to today's paper: Patriot Act draws criticism
Unfortunately, the online article doesn't contain the photo which is printed prominently on the front page under the headline. It's a picture of a small sign which is posted under a bust of Thomas Jefferson. The sign basically lets patrons know that the Federal agents could be monitoring their Internet activity or borrowing records and that the librarians are forbidden from informing one if zir records have been obtained by Federal agents.
this news is nothing new to me, of course, but i like the juxtaposition of Jefferson and the warning.

Sep. 11th, 2003 11:27 pmRussian priest defrocked for performing gay marriage ceremony
now, i do hope they have a more developed political platform (they're running for office) than their quote indicates, but hey--the first in-church gay marriage in russia! way to go! they weren't allowed to register the union at the state office and that irks me, since i don't believe the state should use religious guidelines for marriage terms.
i hope Father Vladimir is able to at least spread his message of peace elsewhere.
I have no qualms against religious institutions deciding they don't want to perform certain marriages. so long as the state's not involved, it's all fine by me. i do, however, like to see religious officials embrace diversity, even at risk to their own careers.
