Jun. 4th, 2002 07:51 pmwe have some kind of flycatcher... it might be an eastern phoebe. i'm not real good on identifying flycatchers.
well, our boxwoods attract lots of flies.
so we have several young phoebes (they still have wingstripes, most of them, but the stripes are fading fast) fluttering about. their tails bob and they swoop down and snatch bugs out of the air all day long.
i think we have an eastern pewee, too. it has a different song and doesn't bob its tail, but it looks a lot like the phoebe, just with brighter wing stripes.
hard telling, though.
we also have bluejays, titmice (both tufted titmice and various chickadees), graaaaaackles, nuthatches, mockingbirds, eastern bluebirds, robins, downy woodpeckers, goldfinches, cardinals.... the list goes on and on. :)
i put a birdbath out today. all the puddles in the driveway are dried up and have become dirtbaths.
i repotted some plants, replanted the petunias, split and potted the pennyroyal seedlings (hoping to drive away some bugs, swept the porch, ID'd my nearest trees (i've forgotten a lot of stuff in the years i've been ill), tossed down some mint, basil, and thyme seed, in hopes that they might take.
i'm tired.
and i have some sun. no burn. i don't burn easily unless i'm in the sun allll day and in the water, too.
i wasn't even in the sun much today.
ah, well. i needed some vitamin D. we'll see how my photoallergy is doing, too.
OHHHH! when i was moving the cooler to the back porch so it could dry in the sun, i walked right past our quietest neighbor.
it's black, with a yellowish belly with black spots. about four-feet long. and was sunning itself on our porch (just the first foot or so).
gorgeous, gorgeous king snake. :)

Jun. 4th, 2002 11:33 pmat some point yesterday, i consumed soy.
not a lot. possibly just a minute bit of lecithin, mono & diglycerides, vitamin E, or even soy oil. most likely, it was soybean oil, because the reaction is quite nasty, but not systemic.
just a few nasty patches of itchy itchy skin (with a lovely rash to boot).
*sigh*
the only culprit is my favorite restaurant. i ate there yesterday with fil. normally, this place is really good about my allergies. since the waitress was new, i mentioned the soy allergy and asked that she not serve the falafel. normally, i just ask for the falafel to go on a separate plate, but this place uses chickpeas *and* fava beans in the falafel and fil can't eat fava. (It's that whole glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency of erythrocytes...)
Anyhow, she gave me stuffed grape leaves instead, which i gave to fil. when i'm on my period, certain things, like grape leaf, trigger my gag reflex. the other food was so good. the new owner has made some of the recipes spicier and yummier. she asked how i was (this is the place i ordered take-out from while in the hospital in february, so she knew something was up when boy and fil arrived to pick up food *without* me) and such. YUM.
but...
the lebanese salad in my veggie combo tasted different. later, after dinner, i realized why--it tasted like commercial italian dressing, rather than olive oil, lemon juice, and parsley.
*sigh*
i hate my allergies sometimes.
