this evening, i asked boy if we could go for a drive. the first place we stopped was warren. warren is listed as a town on the map. it might've been a small depot a hundred or two hundred years ago. now it's a few houses and a narrow lane. well, there's a public access to the james river there. boy pulled the car up and we got out.

i didn't really notice what i was doing... it was evening and it rained all afternoon, so it was cricket-y.

i chatted briefly with some fisherman.

then boy says, "wow, there's lot of crick... hey! those aren't crickets!"

so i look down...

hundreds of tiny frogs or toads. they're springing every which way.

i was thrilled...

i caught several. the largest had a body about as wide as a quarter. the smallest was half the size of my pinky fingernail.

Awesome! There was one really great spot where I used to live that always had huge numbers of little baby toads, in about every possible autumn leaf color. I miss them.

Yayyyy!! Yay for tiny-toaders!! :D

They used to come out like that at Ronnie's Pond in Minnesota, where I grew up, and you had to be super-careful not to step on them . . . they're so damn adorable!!

-- Andi, wants a toad now :D
