I'm all for promoting breastfeeding, of course. And while I will not cover while doing so, I try not to grumble *too* much about nursing covers, provided nobody is mandating the use of them. (I don't grumble about people using them in general.)

Anyhow, the Please Touch Museum in Philly has a Nanny Caddy vending machine. It has stuff like wipes, some diapers, NUK pacifiers, pacifier wipes (which struck me as a ridiculous emergency item--there are plenty of bathrooms), and toddler take and toss sippies/flatware.

But there was one thing which really made my brain go "sproing".

For all your breastfeeding emergencies. (click to en-biggen)

I have to admit, I can't see why a nursing cover would be an emergency item. "Oh, NO! I forgot a cover, I can't nurse my baby! My infant will starve!" This is not a realistic scenario.

Oh, well. As my friend S said, at least they're trying to promote breastfeeding.

I find that beyond odd. Hardly an emergency item. Does that museum have a changing room with a rocker for nursing? The one locally does so if one was really opposed to nursing wherever she could sit in the little changing room and nurse. I never bothered. I just nursed S. wherever.

I have no idea if there's a nursing room. I don't look for them as I neither seek them out for nursing, nor need to pump. They have multiple changing tables in the restrooms and family restrooms on each level. But as for commode-free nursing rooms, I really don't know.

Well yay for family restrooms. Our local museum only has the standard restrooms with one changing table in each. That's why I usually use the changing room for changing diapers...that's how I know about the rocking chair.

As I said else-'net, I was dealing with this shit nearly *30* years ago. Have we not matured a bit since then wrt breastfeeding? Apparently not.

short answer is "no".

longer answer is mostly just a list of examples to flesh out the short answer.

I would hazard a guess that the machine is stocked by a third party vendor who sees themselves as trying to cover everyone's needs (no pun intended).

I think the machine is only stocked by nanny caddy:

I suspect that, unlike the exhibitionist trollops on your flist, there some (many? a few?) women who are shy about exposing themselves while breastfeeding, and that's the targeted market.

It's a disposable cover. So it's pretty much a one/limited-use emergency-item. The notion that someone would *not nurse* their hungry babe is what's so odd. I get that many women use covers (though covers are far more obvious than the small amount of possibly exposed skin). It's the whole convenience/emergency thing which is mind-boggling to me.
