Pope Jericho
Seriously . . . how can you say goodbye to a dog like this?

By remembering that you have made him very happy for years and he's done the same for you?

*hug*

It sucks, whatever. I appear to be spontaneously bursting into tears at any random mention of poodles, so I can't imagine what it's like for you.

You remember that he was a rescue and you saved him and gave him stability for the rest of his life at a time when his future was very unclear. You loved each other unconditionally. I love and miss all our dogs, but rejoice in the wonderful life they had with us. Tell him to go toward the light and that Jude, Tramp and Dutchess are waiting at the Rainbow Bridge and Bailey will be there soon.

Love, Mom

As someone who has had to make this decision, I just have to say...

Some people wait too long, some people act quickly. This is one of the worst decisions anyone ever has to make, and nothing leaves you feeling good. I admire your strength, compassion and especially your love for your silly pope poodle. You are a wonderful puppy mom.

It is SO terrible to say goodbye to such beautiful, wonderful creatures. I empathize with you and hope his passing is gentle on all of you.

I'm actually replying to this post and the one following. You will always treasure the memory of these last days together. When Boze went I was also lucky enough to have a vet who made house calls and it made so much difference in the quality of the experience. Nothing makes it easy, but bringing some grace and dignity to the scene sure helps. My heart is with you all this evening.

Animals can let you know when they're ready. (My icon is of my beloved cat, Dusty, who let me know when she was ready; she was 19. I never thought I could say goodbye to her, but she let me know. I'm not even sure how.)

Mine was 5. He had FIV and was on his 5th bladder infection/crystal unblocking from his urethra surgery when the doctor came in and said, "we can unblock him, but he is never going to stop being in pain again". Despite all of the diet changes and medications, when we woke up that morning, we found that he couldn't even stand up. At that point, I knew that we had waited too long. He was just so sweet and wonderful and the most snuggling loving kitty. It was hard to stop being selfish and to just let him stop being in pain. Silly humans.
