Jerry's home!
Apr. 1st, 2009 06:37 pmJericho walked in the door and went straight to the kitchen, demanding water. He drank quite a bit, so we're waiting to see if it was too much, too fast. He refused to eat or drink for the vet today, but that could be stubborness and depression as much as illness. He's alert, tail is wagging and he's gotten up and down off the couch with no assistance.
He's turned down both cream cheese and monterey jack, so we'll have to make him take his prednisone the hard way.
I'm going to go buy some short-grain sticky white rice--lowest phosporus count of the rices. The vet doesn't really care that he's on a kidney-friendly diet, he just wants him to eat something. He turned his nose up at kibble and pumpkin, so I'm going to go get some food and try feeding him something special. If he won't eat, he won't eat. He does know best right now, I imagine, and nothing tastes nor smells right when the kidneys are malfunctioning.
I'm loathe to leave, but I want to get goodies for my baby dog.
He is going to die. And it will be kidney failure (or euthanasia). There's no question about that, the only determination will be when and it's still too soon to tell whether he will survive this bout. Day by day.
Oh, my sweet doggie has closed his eyes to rest. This is very good.

Date: 2009-04-01 10:54 pm (UTC)I'm glad he's home with you.
I was feeding casper hamburger, rice and carrots and he ate it (pureed) even as bad as his jaw was. I think it was the beef that he went for. At that point he was refusing any thing else. I have no idea how any of those are on the kidneys but apparently casper thought it was good. I imagine without the carrots would taste okay too. I was making Midnight chicken soup when she was sick - chicken, potato (or rice) and carrots. That was her favorite. I hope you find something that Jerry wants to eat.
*hugs*

Date: 2009-04-01 11:46 pm (UTC)ground beef (raw or cooked) is about the only thing baka will eat when sick. little bits at a time are going to be easiest on what's left of his kidneys, though getting jerry to eat at all will be the tricky part. the fattier the meat, the less it'll be processed by the kidneys. ground, or pureed veggies (cabbage, carrots, squash) are all low kidney impact. though getting baka to go near even the most hidden veggies when sick is just about impossible.
dairy, while good for tempting and comforting a sick doggie, use with caution. too much phosphorus and calcium.
*hugs* for you
*belly rubs* for jerry.

Date: 2009-04-02 01:33 am (UTC)Telly's poor ole digestive system is more or less made of tissue paper, at this point. When he gets pukey or otherwise digestively-challenged, we make him browned hamburger and rice...seems like the vet recommends that for just about every problem...it's also what he recommended for Cleo when her kidneys went.

Date: 2009-04-02 01:49 am (UTC)I only had time to stop at WFM (initially), so I checked their ground meat. The beef wasn't the fatty stuff, so I picked up ground lamb.
I mixed it with egg whites, butter, and (cooked) white sticky rice. He begged for some of tom's rice during dinner, but white is better than brown, I read. Tom hand-fed him and he just ate about a quarter cup. He can have a bit more in awhile, I think.
http://www.dogaware.com/kidney.html#diet I'm looking at this chart. I'm also roasting a sweet potato for him. He enjoys sweet potatoes and pumpkin, but wasn't too keen on his pumpkin tonight.
