For reasons unbeknownst to me, nobody is carrying the 12-gallon rubberneck. I can find 18 gallon on up. I can find the long, flat 24 and 41qt. But I cannot find the simple, sturdy half-size 12-gallon bin.

Sure, the Empire of Evil has all manner of bins in hideous colors (translucent tan?), but they don't have solid 12-gallons, or really any 12-gallons. I might brave k-mart today, but it's bound to be over-run with back to schoolers and brand-spankin-new first years (they don't call them "freshmen" at UVA because they are only allowed to use monosyllabic words).

I might try the various independent hardware stores.

I want the 12 gallon size for ease in packing for our camping trip. The 18 gallon bins are just too big--things get lost in there. Shorter bins give me more packing options in the car--I can stand two of those side by side and Jericho won't feel so cloistered in the back seat. (Ever listen to a poodle claw at a pile of roughnecks?) Heck, I can fit more of the shorter bins in the trunk so I might not even *need* to put anything back with Jericho.

Anyhow, I'm off for a potentially fruitful (but likely fruitless) shopping venture. Wish me luck.

they called them first years at my college too, but that was officially because the term "freshman" is discriminatory to women...

It's actually because learning is lifelong. First years, second years, third years, fourth years, etc.

Oh, fine, defend the old alma mater.

And while you're at it, why don't you come wait in line at K-mart with me? ;)

That's the nastiest K-mart on the planet. You couldn't pay me money to stand in line there.

An independent hardware store might be willing to order the bins for you if they are not in stock (assuming that you can wait for the bins and they are not an immediate need). KMart during university move-in time is just plain scary. Two years in Bloomington taught me that this is a situation to avoid at all costs.

No time to order, actually. I thought about that, but too late.

the dollar stores only had huuuuuge bins. CVS had some smaller ones, though. :)
