More NWS-speak.

MOTORISTS SHOULD USE EXTRA CAUTION THROUGH THIS EVENING...AS
RAINFALL MAY LEAD TO PONDING OF WATER ON ROADWAYS.

Yeah, I think I've been seeing "ponding" for quite a while out of our local NWS office.

Okay, does the NWS still use the text-to-speech thingy on their weather radio broadcasts? You know, the one that sounds like Fred on the Mac?

Because I just ran this through Fred, letting my computer speak to me. And "ponding on roadways" would make me swerve off the road.

They all still use a text-to-speech system, but the voice they use now depends on the office - some have upgraded to a cleaner, more human-sounding voice. Ours uses the newer, cleaner voice for forecasts but Fred still reads the climatological data.

I actually heard a female NWS text-to-speech voice a few days ago. It scared me more than the male's, though I don't know why. Maybe it went beyond my space of familiarity. She sounded like an alien too. Which could have been the reason for my freaking out over it.

Ponding. Sounds like something teenage kids do in small towns with water holes when they're bored. I'm sure it would involve beer.

Bwahahaha! :-)

I can see how dangerous that'd be behind the wheel.

That's horrid! What s/w are they using? I heard better t2s s/w 20 years ago!

Uh, that's just the standard Fred voice. That's not from the radio, that's from my Mac. ;) That's the voice the local radio uses, though.

They should check out the ponding outside my house. I can't believe how much rain we've gotten this weekend.
