[livejournal.com profile] serenejournal wrote a little survey...

1. Describe the first (or an early) phrase/idiom you remember figuring out the meaning to.
Grandpa always talked about how he went to the school of hard knocks. Once I realized it was "knocks" and not "Knox" (knox blox gelatin jigglers!), it made a lot more sense.

2. What is the first thing you remember reading for pleasure?
I can't remember learning how to read. I was reading well before age five. I remember being fascinated by a book on Abraham Lincoln which belonged to one of my babysitter's daughters. I had The Night Before Christmas memorized by age four, but I'm not sure whether I read it or just made my mom read it over and over. I was fond of reciting it for hours on end. This drove my babysitter's kids nuts as the months grew warmer.

3. (Especially for porcinea) Do you consider yourself "a reader"? If not, how would you describe your relationship to books and literature at the current time?
I devour the written word. I'm a reader.

4. What's the book (story/play/whatever) you've re-read the most often? What is it about that piece of literature that excites you the most?
The Forest of Ap. It's a kid's book, not particularly well-written, but I like it. It's a fairy tale/fantasy setting for an allegorical tale about environmental awareness and growing up.
The Lorax for the resonance of the rhythm and message

5. If you suddenly woke up tomorrow with the writing talent and motivation to write anything you put your hand to, what kind of work would you start churning out?
Odd little dystopian novels full of wry humor.

6. Tell about the person in your life, if any, who most influenced your feelings about language and reading.
my parents always had lots of books and let me read what I wanted. I'm very glad of this. I really value the love for words and books they instilled in me.

7. What are you reading right now? And do you recommend it/them?
Robert Jordan's The Great Hunt (book two of the wheel of time series)... for folks interested in epic fantasy, this is probably a pretty darn good book to read. i'm re-reading the series so i can read the 10th book and remember what's going on.

I'm doing the same thing. I've got "Crossroads of Twilight" on the nightstand, waiting to be read after I reacquaint myself with the series.
