We went hiking yesterday--our favorite quick hike for lower energy days--White Rock Falls.

Here's the whole gallery, but I'll link a few pics here, too.

The pink azaleas (Pinxter Flower) are blooming--they're very odd and pretty. Some of mountain laurels and rhododendrons had tiny buds, but they won't bloom for several weeks.

On the way down the trail, I spotted lots of small green plants with red berries. They weren't anything I could remember, but they looked familiar. Later, I realized that they were teaberries, also known as wintergreen! So, we broke every rule in the book and ate bright red berries from shiny-leaved plants. Yum. Technically, they were seed capsules, but they were tasty. We chewed and spit, so as to let the seeds stay in the woods.

Really cool mantis egg case.

I also saw several Rattlesnake Orchids, also known as Rattlesnake Plantain. The foliage is really distinctive.

We also saw Rattlesnake Weed. It also has distinctive foliage. These were a few days or more off from blooming. A few had flowerstalks and buds.

I tested out the remote control at the falls. I was rather impressed. Boy enjoyed watching the scene upside down.

We also spotted a few Wild Bleeding Heart plants clinging to the rock face. They're not terribly common, so I was thrilled.

We saw one lone pink lady slipper. It was very shy, facing away from us and the creek. And we found several shrubby things I could not identify. I'm thinking a bearberry or something related. Any ideas?
