According to my local paper (which doesn't have its own web presence any more, thanks to amalgamation with stuff.co.nz and generally sucking for online local content, now), another incident like that happened a while ago at Middlemore Hospital in Auckland, to a man having an appendectomy.
So folks, be very careful when mixing alcohol and surgery.
"Waitemata District Health Board chief executive Dwayne Crombie said yesterday that surgical swabbing alcohol, set alight by a diathermy machine - used to cauterise surgical cuts - appeared the fire's most likely cause."
It's a little known fact that New Zealand was colonized by a rogue band of fire-eating circus clowns. Their descendants have an uncanny knack for bursting into flames at inopportune moments. This is truly the most "likely" cause of the fire, but the authorities obviously don't want the rest of the world to know the real story. This is why they propogate the ovine mythos, lest the rest of the planet discover the fiery truth.
