*sigh*

our local phone bill is outrageous.

our monthly taxes *exceed* the individual bills for either phone line.

our regular charges:

13.78 line 1
13.78 line 2
3.10 other charges (911 and relay)

that's all fine and dandy. it's the taxes section. i've NEVER paid this much for taxes.

11.02 Interstate access surcharge
1.00 federal universal service fund
.96 number portability charge
1.20 public rights-of-way use
1.22 federal tax
4.00 consumer utility tax

sheesh. you know, i disliked verizon, but we never paid this much in taxes that are supposedly universal. that was in maryland, of course.

but 19.40 in taxes and surcharges? crazy.

I know a number of people who are dropping home phone lines period (since they have cable modem) and are just using cell phones on a regular basis. With all the free weekend and evening minutes and free long distance, it is a hell of a lot cheaper. Once we financially get back on our feet we are going to up our account a bit, buy a few extra batteries for the phones, and then tell ameritech to take a long walk off a short pier.

dropping the home phone lines isn't an option. boy works from home. cable isn't available in the boonies. satellite modem is EXPENSIVE (far outside our budget)... boy also has to teleconference once a week while he's online, so we need those two lines.

that one charge that comes out to 11 bucks is basically what we have to pay for living out here in the boonies. it's charged in high risk and rural areas. so we pay extra for sub-par service. this totally sucks. i wouldn't complain if we could connect at 56k (or heck, even get dsl), but we can't. because the lines are old and the relays are older. we're lucky to connect at 28.8k, most of the time it's far slower.

They are all a bunch of crooks!

Hey Kras,

I know what you mean about the freakin phone bill.
As far as im concerned all these phone companies are a bunch of crooked bastards.
My phone bill is over 40 bucks before phone calls with all of the taxes and services. Its sucks, they all suck!!!
You have to watch your bill carefully too. Some of these long distance companies somehow end up on there. Very very sneaky.
Like I said, they are all crooked.

off topic:
Come to my blog and join the CFIDS Bloggers webring. I just started it, its new. So far kit and dolphie are on there.

I'm considering doing the same. Ameritech just gave me a complete hassle and runaround with my DSL/internet service, and I've drafted a long letter detailing what inconsistent morons they are. I doubt it'll get any attention, but it's worth a shot.
