If any of you yarn addicts would like to point me toward a self-striping yarn that doesn't contain wool, I'd be quite grateful.

No animal fibers. This is an allergy thing, not a veg thing. After all, I wear leather. ;)

i don't have any bookmarks on the iBook for any decent pics but almost ALL of my shoes are leather.

i have yet to try any self-striping yarns myself, but maybe some of these folks in the knitting community can help.

Hmmm, how about dyeing your own? What are you wanting to make with the yarn?
I've noticed that self-striping kind of depends on what your project is.

are you planning on putting elastic in the ends? (I've been thinking of how to do something like this myself and keep catching on how to finish the edges.)

if the elastic is made from natural rubber latex, it's a problem.

And now comes the part where none of the self-striping non-wool yarns come in colorways I *like*.

Ah, well. For the time being, I'll use solid colors, anyway, but I wanted to know for the future.

ez_mo's method is as hand/wrist-safe for me as it is for her own hands.

leg warmers could be potentially wrist safe if you knit them in the round, with circular needles or double pointeds. that way the weight of what you're knitting rests in your lap instead of pulling on your wrists.

be careful to pick a somewhat stretchy, more flexible yarn. some cottens are very tight, which makes them (for me anyway) more difficult to knit with, which means my wrists get strained more easily.

what colors are you looking for? if i see any you might like i can tell you about them.

The Southwest Trading Company Bamboo yarn comes in varigated, but not exactly self striping--close though. It is from a manufacturer that also produces soy yarns, so you might need to be careful there. If you rib them at the top (k1, p1), the legwarmers should stay up in that yarn. I'll try to post a pic later of my project in that yarn (I've been meaning to for weeks).

I'll poke through my stash tonight too to take a look. I can't think of anything else off the top of my head.

I know this has nothing to do with self striping wool...but you did mention you had a wool allergy so when I saw (http://www.livejournal.com/community/fakehair/2544362.html) I thought of you. They're looking for guinea pigs to test out some non-wool dreads.
