Aug. 22nd, 2003 07:28 pmyeah, so...
i was driving down Main St with
mbickers, warning her of the faulty wiring in the apartment we had just looked at (Hot, reverse outlet--and that was the only 3-prong in the place). i started smelling the "hot wire" smell... so i reached over to put the AC on max, which recirculates the inside air. It was already on Max. Crap... so I turned it off and rolled down the window, where i caught a faint whiff of the same smell. i leaned in to turn on the vent and AC... puffs of white smoke come out. turned 'em off. i couldn't pull over anywhere safe and my car was *running* fine and all my gauges were fine, so I drove the half mile to Spooky House and parked. I checked under the hood--everything was fine. I called dad... He told me to call AAA in the morning and have it towed to my garage.
He called back and suggested I check my CD player. It worked, but when I opened the trunk, the hot wire smell was worse and the CD player was *hot*... much hotter than anything else in the trunk and i hadn't been using the CD player at all today. I checked the wires there and under the dash (unplugged it, too). couldn't find any perceptibly hot or burned spots (besides, it still worked).
granted, it is very hot (97) and humid right now. it's conceivable that the cd player is having issues, which is creating the smell. the "smoke" might've been water vapor. it sometimes comes out when the AC is turned on on really hot days.
anyhow, since i couldn't *find* burned wires, i'll have to have it towed to the garage tomorrow... and wait for monday for the diagnostics to be run. *sigh* i'll turn on the car tomorrow to see if the smell persists, of course. i might even need to move it so the tow truck can get to it (parallel parked on the uphill side of the street).
i didn't need this.
