Edmonton?

[livejournal.com profile] mbickers is requesting advice about living in Edmonton, specifically living without a car in Edmonton.

Heh, it's funny:

It struck me that I ought to be joining some Edmonton-specific lists to look for information. So I joined several, and posted my question, and it seems that the general opinion is "It's a bitch to go to IKEA, but other than that you're mostly fine. Live by the university."

Whereas my f-list is all screaming "NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO YOUR CAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAR!" ... which understand; living in Charlottesville without a car was wretched, but still, so funny. It's a 2500 mile trip; it's hard to justify having it "just in case."

Yeah--and the number of people who claim that you just can't live in DC without a car. Um, I lived in DC for quite awhile without a car . . . and even when I *had* a car, I went without more often than not. Hell, I lived in Gaithersburg for a couple years and survived just fine without a car.

The one thing that made life happier for on-foot trips was a good collapsible four-wheeled cart, though most of 'em might be too short for you and C to use comfortably. That kind of a cart is a bitch to take on public transit, though I did that, too.

I have a friend who doesn't drive and lives near the university there. She has no problem getting wherever she needs to go.
